Backfire with CAI

First off, I have an 07 TL AT with a Fujita cai.
I was pulling out of my neighborhood and getting on it in ss mode, when I shifted from first to second it sounded like it backfired. This is the first time it happened and I wasn't able to get it to do it again. I don't even remember if I had let off the gas a little when I shifted or if I stayed in it. After that happened, I make sure I stay on the gas when I shift in manual mode. Any one else have this happen?

Did you happen to bump the rev-limiter? Sometimes the right combo of limiter, shifting, and letting off the gas can cause a slight hiccup. You wouldn't notice it as much with the factory silencers on.

Now that I have a CAI, I notice a slight intake backfire during cranking on cold starts.

I didn't hit the limiter, I was at about 6000 rpm though. I've hit the limiter once before going from first to second and it didn't backfire. The car had only been running for about 5 minutes.
I always drive in ss mode, I wish I would have gotten a 6 MT.

This problem is caused by the combination of being an Automatic and Drive By Wire. I could repeat it not stop in my TL when I had it. Full Throttle in i think it was 2nd gear and bump it up to 3rd gear at around 6k staying on the throttle. It would do it damn near every time. The addition of an intake amplifies the sound. It did it to me 1 time when the car was stock with the factory intake. However, like clockwork with the addition of the intake. The throttle plate is slamming closed to prevent a full throttle shift to the next gear (limit power) then it opens really fast so you get this backfire type sound through the intake system.

So all in all it's normal and not causing any problems!

Very interesting. My car always felt like it had some sort of torque management but I assumed it pulled timing in between shifts.

When they "ss" mode they mean sport shift. All 3G TL's (auto) have it.

It does it in regular auto mode too. I never use SS, and I had the "bang" happen to me numerous times with my AEM. Here is another thread discussing the same thing. Well, I was discussing it while others were "barking up another tree." So, look for the replies from me in the link below

Yes...thanks for your insights & explanation. What you've described are the exact same conditions that cause my '06 AT with AEM CAI (w. 8K miles on the Odo) to make those sounds. I also had what I thought was 'hesitation' from the motor during the first of these events...turned out to be me backing off the gas...for obvious reasons. Anyway, the unmufflered nature of the CAI pipe seems to act like a 'megaphone', amplifying the sound.

Happened to me twice in one day, but never after that. It was weird, I thought I messed something up.

My TL did this too in automatic mode after I put on my CAI but now the car is straightpiped and it'll backfire multiple times on take off and sometimes shifting gears it's not as loud as stock exhaust on a CAI but it's like an ak47 going off

if you move the IAT sensor closer to the filter (further from stock location) it dumps a tiny bit extra fuel and can cause backfire. AEM has it in their instructions as the "off road" intake air temp sensor location
