ATLP 3rd Cat Race Pipe

Got a cool little prototype in the mail today finally after working a few details out. It's the 3rd Cat Race Pipe!

Here she is.

Make note of the tabs and screws.

Not convinced yet?

Here she is naked. Stay legal-looking! Retains the use of the factory heatshield for both aesthetics, and heat dissipation. It may also be used without it.

2.5" ID, SS construction, solid flanged, OE mounting tabs. Bolts up to stock, or aftermarket J-Pipes as well as exhausts.

Pre-order now at http://www.acuratlparts.com/product.php?pid=18

Limited batches, ETA: 1-month from today.

so conflicted...
I may do it though.

I have, and plan to keep, my "your" TL-S primaries.

It's a little to pricey though. $150 for a piece of pipe and 2 flanges...

The Megan pipe is full polish, and has a resonator baffle in it... Much more complex than this, looks like an aftermarket high flow cat, and costs $80 delivered.

I'd buy this for $65... but likely not for $150

^agree with the price... mike?

I would've liked for this straight piped section to have been optionally added to the jpipe :-? and voted as such when mike was in the "feeler thread" process... that is where mike and I spoke of the visual inspection cheat...

I for one would've preffered to pay $450 for the jpipe with this extension already built in... sadly that isn't the case

I do believe this is more designed for those fellas who require this to pass a visual inspection

kennedy: ... I was thinking of totally eliminating procats... but honestly they are alive and well, found no substrate detirioration... oh and polished? lol doesn't matter... first couple rainy days cancels that out

ps. mike... this includes the heat shields right? $15

One quick question, doesn't the stock cat have studs on it? Mike, are you going to include bolts?

This uses your factory heat shield, optional. You will need to re-use the heat shield bolts from your original cat if you plan to keep the heat shield on. The cat comes with the necessary hardware and gaskets to mount it onto the exhaust/j-pipe.

I'm a little confused. I searched for 3rd cat deletes and megan pipes and all I find are discussions of none, to little, to unverified gains?

I'm guessing a dyno with this, the j-pipe and the exhaust would be on it's way soon?

noise increase isn't really that much... at top end near redline it will likely be slightly raspy

Can you put it back together after you gutted it? Or would you have to buy a new cat if you wanted to go back to stock?

yeah no need for the heatshield bracket

But then again if I need to re-sell the test pipe later on someone else might want the brackets.

People !! dont buy the megan test pipe is a bottleneck with the ATLP j-pipe.

You can't put it back together but unlike many members here, I've had my car smogged at a friend's shop and it passes with flying colors without it.

By gutting the factory cat, you will have a cavity/well where the catalytic substrate used to be. This is a straight through design that doesn't have a bulge in the pipe, meaning the flow velocity isn't affected by the pipe variation. You also can't go back to stock if your going to break out the stock substrate and you would need to buy a new OE cat($200) during smog.

People !! dont buy the megan test pipe is a bottleneck with the ATLP j-pipe.
This is also a 2.5" diameter tubing which work well with either the ATLP J-Pipe, or the J-shift as it maintains the same diameter.

Mike...any discount for us ATLP Jpipe + ATLP exhaust owners?
ATLP owners receive a 10% discount. Make sure you mention it on your checkout.

Time frame will be a little less than a month.

Just installed the race pipe today and snapped a few pictures compared to stock, and how it looks mounted on the car.

I felt gains especially from 3k and up. This is on a stock exhaust, only with the ATLP J-Pipe. I'm sure gains will be even more significant for those who have an exhaust system. Oh and ATLP J-Ppipe + race pipe = light G35 gurgle.

Velocity is a non issue that far back in the exhaust. Everyone keeps ignoring the fact that my car has been smog tested without the third cat and it still passes so why would you ever need to put it back on?

No, backpressure is not an issue with the third cat removed, not even close. Everyone seems to have jumped on the backpressure bandwagon. It's hard to design an exhaust system so good that it has too little backpressure. With a convertor hanging off of each head, you would still have plenty of backpressure even if you cut the exhaust off after the primary convertors.

It's pretty straight forward, and IMO it was easier than the J-Pipe install. I drove around with it, and didn't notice any difference in smell or any smoke at all. As "I hate cars" said, this shouldn't be a problem for smog.

lol The bad thing is, is that I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to the cars exhaust.. or any other component mechanic-wise!
I hope this will be as easy as installing a CAI + TB spacers for the first time.. if not a little harder [because in the end that CAI was actually very easy].

I can think of a couple of reason why I would want it back on.

1. Want to return to stock to sell the car and don't feel like tricking the buyer.(They might not ever know, but my concious would know.)

2. As I get older I might decide that I want to emit less pollutants and forgo the 2-3 horses.

For either case, it would be nice to know that I could bolt the stock cat right back on without having to spend $200+ to get another one.
