Another exhaust question

I have a 04' TL and took it to my local exhaust shop when i first bought it and told them to take the resonator off, it sounds practaly stock but has some exhaust note similar to a 350z. Now ive grown accustom to the noise level which is hardly any and went back to get quoted on a pair of magnaflows to replace the factory stock rear mufflers. The owner recommended instead of paying all that money for the magnaflows that i should try to take the stockers off and straight pipe it and see how that works out. I am going back on Monday to do this, but my question is, has any body straight piped the rear mufflers and left the mid muffler on w/o a resonator? Will it be extraordinarily loud and raspy? I have factory PC's and factory j-pipe. He also said he could put a resonator on there if its to raspy and it will tune the exhaust note to where it wouldn't be raspy and will quite it down a bit also. Opinions please..

NOTE: please dont say "get a full cat back b/c stage mods are gay bc its no go blah blah blah.. this isnt a race car im not looking for speed im just looking for some sound. Thanks

-04 TL 167,000 miles
-Stock j pipe,pre-cats and still has mid muffler

If you straight pipe it depending on where you live you might not pass emissions. It will be slightly raspy

no emissions test's here. just have to have a cat. And a resonator will solve the rasp correct?

Ya people usually get a dynomax or magnaflow resonator. Its smaller and leads to more roar.
If you go with the magnaflow setup it will only run around $600-$700 installed.
This should give you a nice sound--mid muffler delete, smaller resonator, straight pipe

600 bucks for just a resonator and straight pipe?! the dude quoted me 100 for straight piping and he has different resonators in stock and he says they are about another 100 installed, so im looking at around 200 bucks. According to this shop. Heres the shop, they do a lot of my customers cars exhaust work.

No that price I listed was for my setup. It comes with the 2 mufflers, 4 tips (3.5'), and resonator for $400. I had it all welded on for $300. But im in Canada and everything seems to be cheaper in the states. Thats why I said $600.

For just a straight pipe it would be much cheaper. The magnaflow resonator is around $60

Mufflers have nothing to do with emissions, regardless of location.

I'm going to save you A LOT of money.

I personally ran middle muffler only (rears deleted and middle oem resonator deleted) for one of the longest duration of time for my set up.

including stock everything with just one single oem mid muffler to 3rdcat delete and atlp v2 jpipe to single oem mid muffler. After this phase it just got louder adfter every set up, i'm well over 100+ db according to readers at multiple ranges of distance

Best compromise of anything, very low drone and it is audible all the same. Sometimes I wish i'd just left it that way but I just kept getting louder to where I am now

O well tomorrow i'm adding a venturi tube and hopefully it'll quiet the interior drone

edit: my bad you've already done it, you'll not regret it lol

it sounds great, more so on the outside, the drone on the interior is a little much for my taste, when i go back to that shop for inspection in August ill prolly get a small resonator to try and tame the drone some. but it sounds like a beast! The plus side is when i just cruise around it sounds factory, only drones around 2k rpms, and when i floor it, it sounds awesome

I have a Dynomax res and mid muffler, rears deleted, no drone or rasp. Cold idle noticeable over stock, once it's warmed up the idle is very quiet. It's not loud until rev it so you can sneak around if need be without annoying anyone.

24215. Some people use the 24235 which is a few inches longer, but if you still have cats I don't see it being an issue.

Regarding the 24235...I have rasp with a j-pipe and stage 3.

It's only at 3000-3500rpm, but still...I'm hoping after putting some miles on it, the rasp goes away.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. However, The Machine, has the same setup and has no rasp maybe my welds aren't very good.

hmm well im sticking with the stock j pipe for now and for the foreseable future. I have no rasp, just drone. Hoping this will take care of it. One thing you can look into though is putting a second resonator on there. My supercharged cobalt had a long tube header with a small cat, and corsa cat-back which had two resonators and a muffler. Also on my Civic Si i had two small resonators on there as well.

Extra resonators won't hurt, straight through so it shouldn't affect flow. There's a reason the factory setup had 3 mufflers and a resonator, at least for drone/noise reduction.

I agree.

In the future, I plan on getting a catback...the rasp doesn't kill me right now but still an annoyance...

That seems to be a glass pack muffler, not a resonator.

The 214 looks way different than mine. I think it's cheapest on Amazon.

lol

I'd find the other thread in this section, about using the 3 different Dynomax models...

I myself have the 24235, I believe it is the longest one they make.

24215 is shorter (good if you don't add a j-pipe).

Hey guys, just getting different opinions - As per another member GuLuMoNeY's recommendation, I took the TL to a local muffler shop, seemed to be a decent fella; his recommendation was to go with a custom exhaust made at his shop vs. buying a ready made one from XLR8 or Tsudo or gReddy (the last being the one I really would have loved to have!!). I showed him this youtube video as this is what I want -
He recommends using a 3" pipe (I need to confirm material on the pipe) crush bent in his shop with magnaflow mufflers that will look and sound similar to the gReddy - all installed for $575!! (He said he'd let me try out the system without resonator) and if it's too loud then he'll place the res no charge; Also he showed me some options for drone that he could do at an additional cost ($70); It would be great to have your guys's opinions as to my options
