Am I going crazy? or could it be true?

So yesterday I had a shop remove my mid-muffler, but I left the resonator on. When I drive normal it feels stock, but if I put the pedal down a little and give it some gas, there is a definite note difference, a nice growl if you will. No, it is not my intake because if I put the pedal to the metal then you can hear the intake take over.

Anyhow, I feel as though there is better air flow and a noticable change in acceleration. I am not saying that it feels like I added a comptech Supercharger or anything, but a nicer acceleration. Also, I feel like there is much less back pressure than before. I know that when i would let go of the gas, I would feel like the brakes were slightly applied, however now, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Can someone let me know if I need to schedule an appointment with my Dr. immediately because I am going insane, or could there be greater benefits to removing the mid muffler than just a slight exhaust note increase?

By replacing the mid-muffler with a straight pipe, the exhaust gases probably do flow more freely. If you take apart the muffler you'll see that the entry pipe is actually offset from the exit pipe, so the gases inside the muffler are actually left to find their way out, while the straight pipe would just provide a direct path.

However, I doubt this will actually provide any significant gains since, if my memory serves me right, the mid-muffler is a fair distance away from the engine, and any noticeable gains will only be seen by removing the restriction closer to the engine, so that it doesn't have to "force" the exhaust gases out; they are instead left to flow freely.

This is why an replacing the stock j-pipe with an aftermarket one will actually show a fairly significant gain, because the (base) TL's j-pipe is somewhat restrictive. I believe the TL-S' j-pipe is much more free flowing, so the gains from an aftermarket pipe are much smaller.

The mid-muffler has a straight pipe design. There is no resistance or baffling, like in a resonator. I just think the louder exhaust tone you now hear...makes it seem faster.

When I went to pick up the car from the Exhaust shop, I looked at the resonator and it looks to be more free flowing than the mid-muffler.

The resonator may look straight-thru. But there are ridges all around the perimeter...which create turbulence...thus changing the note and quieting the exhaust and creating a slight restriction. The mid-muffler is free-flowing tube that just has insulation around it to muffle sound.

Does the J pipe just add a lil performance gain or does it make it louder as well? Does anyone have videos of a Mid muffler delet and new J pipe?
