Aftermarket resonator vs mid muffler delete?

So I am intrested in doing either or. I want a no problem mod to give me an added sound similar to the G35 Coupe.

What are the pro and cons of just removing the resonator? or just removing the mid muffler?

what do I get for each? horsepower gain? etest problems...etc...please let me know. I am seriously going to do this.

The only thing I can think of, by removing the resonator (or mid muffler like you called it), it will be louder. It will probably be 50% louder than it is stock.

They make two different types of resonators. Both have the same principles, they use vent holes that lead into the larger section that is packed with a sound-deadening material. The key difference is if the holes sit flush with the inside of the pipe or if they protrude inward to kind of "catch" the sound frequencies better than the other and direct them inward. However, if it is the protruding kind, it will also catch and disrupt the smooth exhaust stream from flowing. This kind of resonator is what OEM's use because they care more about cutting down on sound than performance.

Just a little word of wisdom, the smoother the exhaust flow is, that usually means the faster the exhaust flow which results in more power. But it will be louder and most people (especially those who buy a car like this) will not compromise like this.

It's up to you though

Ya that is true, but it seems like an interesting mod and I do want it to have more sound without compromising performance and oem reliabiltiy and drivability.

So you think simply by changing the resonator to a dynomax will increase noise and horsepower?

Is the resonator the mid muffler? lol..dumb question but I am wondering.

mid muffler equals resonator??

This might be a dumb question but is the mid muffler the resonator? I have been told by someone else on here and I wasn't sure.

Well, to be classified as a resonator, usually it has to be a device that cancels out certain frequencies from the exhaust. And since your mufflers do that too, I guess you could say they're resonators too. So yes, the mid muffler is the resonator, a muffler is a resonator and a resonator is a muffler, if that makes sense.

Just tell us what part you want to delete on the car and we'll know what you're talking about.

One more item for you to consider, to cut into the OEM exhaust pipe and weld a straight pipe, you're looking at the weld itself corroding and developing leaks withing 3 to 5 years depending on your climate and level of salt you get in the winter. If the whole exhaust was stock, however, you could look at getting 10+ years on the stock exhaust system, because it is seamless for the most part and they are remarkable durable.

As for horsepower and noise for a Dynomax, I'll be the first to tell you that you likely won't get as much horsepower increase as you think. I'm thinking in the neighborhood of 2whp would be it... As for noise, I don't think you're going to like the sound of it, but everyone has a different ear so you're just going to have to be the pioneer for it!

Ok well I am still confused. These other guys on here say that the resonator and mid muffler are 2 different things. Myself I don't know. I think replacing the for a dynomax resonator would be good, but I am looking for a similar exhuast note of a infiniti g35 coupe. just and added little bit of sound, horsepower gains dont matter to much ya know?

I just don't know how well you can replicate that exhaust note, to be honest. The exhaust note isn't always in the construction of the exhaust (although 80% of it is), and that's the reason why you can't put a Ford Mustang V-8 exhaust on a cadillac Northstar engine and expect to hear the low rumble like the telltale mustang engine. The G35 has true dual exhaust that comes together at an "X" halfway through the exhaust and then splits again into dual pipes. The TL joins both headers together and uses one exhaust until it reaches the rear and then splits into two. So it's just going to be hard to obtain that same sound no matter what you remove.

Dave, you've got a 3G right?

You seem to be having trouble finding the right forum today.

Moved to the 3G forum.

It's two different things.

Remove the 3rd muffler and substitute the OEM resonator with either a Magnaflow or Dynomax. I couldn't ask for a better sounding exhaust note that is still very close to stock. Expect no performance upgrades with this exhaust modification. Parts and labor shouldn't run much over $100. Highly recommended.

I ended up JUST doing the mid muffler. It sound's great, I can notice it in the cabin enough to satisfy my liking, and outside the car is pretty noticeable, especially with my k&n SRI. I have had my mid muffler removed for about 6 month's, and I have thought about doing the resonator removal, but I passed, I don't want to risk having a ricey cheap sound for such a beautifully crafted car.

My advice, just do the mid muffler, if your satisfied, leave the rest alone. You'll drive yourself crazy looking at the damn thread's and post's and youtube video's trying to figure out what you like. Trust me I know.

exactly, don't get confused with all this stage 2 3 4 15 16 bullshit, just do the mid muffler, youll be happy like i am, if not, do try this resonator thing...that's it..or if you want want to get real crazy do a full cat back exhaust, but for 5 maybe 10 horsepower, i don't think it's worth it, unless your going to keep going with a turbo or supercharger...

What did you replace the mid muffler with? A straight pipe? And where can I find one that fits perfectly? Was yours stainless?

I used stainless steel, the place I got it done had it, and yet just a straight pipe.
