AEM CAI Vibration Mount Broke... FML!!

I've been having issue with my car for several months now. CEL throws 7 Codes - Cylinder 1-6 All misfire, random misfire.

I took the car to a local mechanic to get some suggestions on what I could do to resolve the problem.

He told me to Check the plugs, clean my throttle body, valve adjustment, and etc... So, today I had some free time to get some stuff done.

I took the CAI Filter off to clean... than as I was uninstalling the CAI to clean the TB, I notice the mount was broken off. Who knows how long my car has been sucking debris. Maybe this caused my CEL to come on... Really disappointed, tho i've read other similar storys from other member, but never thought it'd happen to me.

I called AEM, they will have a replacement part sent when it becomes available?? WTF does that mean? and how long should I expect to wait?

So, as I searched my house for my stock intake... I finally found it in the attic. Come to find out, I sold my K&N Air Filter when I purchased the CAI. FML, now I have no ride to Honda or any other auto store to purchase a new filter..

for now your best bet is to tape it up with some Teflon tape or something of the sort and drive as little as you can...

Yikes!
Bright side is that you had more air intake. Vroom vroom?

Something similar happened to me. The intake side of the rubber mounts bolt broke off. I called AEM and being a dumbass told them my car was an 08 Acura TL. He told me that the intake isn't for the car and has never been tested for that car. Long story short they wouldn't replace it for free. No big deal. I ended up getting the same size bolt and using rubber bushings in place of the actual rubber piece on the mount. Worked perfect until I received the actual mount in the mail. I really hope that bracket doesn't brake off my V2. I've seen it happen too many times. Good Luck

people run with no air filters all the time. Lots of people with turbos and ITB's have no air filters at all. They just change there oil alot more.

There have been other threads where people are seeing the same thing.

I would think the motor must be moving in extreme's to break like that.

Is this common with all CAI brands/models or just AEM?

Ya seems to be a pretty common problem with the AEM intakes. I agree with KN_TL though. Those who are breaking them gotta have a lot of play in their motor mounts

From the pics, it looks as though that CAI was mounted to the vibration mount to tight. That only has to be tight enough to prevent the CAI from slipping out of the mount. The CAI has to be able to move slightly with the tourque from the engine, if it can't thats going to break all the time.

As someone else noted, looking at the last picture there appears that there was a lot of stress put on bracket statically. Once you apply engine movement and vibration you were doomed.

I would move the mounting point to eliminate the stress.

You could also bend the bracket but I would worry about initiating another break.

You won't have any problems driving with no vibration mount for the CAI. The intake will rattle, but it won't hurt anything.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but the weld on my Fujita CAI broke. I have since put Gorilla tape over it and kept driving normally. I am going to cut the tube just above the broken weld and put the filter there. This was recommended by P2R. Well, actually they said to run neither CAI or SRI, but somewhere in the middle, so I figured this will do it.

The question I have, is am I losing power? I honestly didn't really feel anything but as I now know my butt dyno sucks. The car sounds much different than when I first put the PCDs on. I mean, it ROARED before and has sounded different for quite some time now. The CAI/PCD had a real nice sound before and that has diminished quite a bit. I'm just wondering if anyone thinks I'm losing any power.

Since you are in NY, it's cold right now so the CAI doesn't do too much.

There is a huge debate on the gains with the CAI but I wouldn't worry about loss of power. The noise it makes has a mind over matter affect.

JB Weld should do the trick until you can get a more permanent fix. Hell, it'll probably be better than new, actually.

I would be careful with this JB weld is great but nothing close to a permanent fix. I can just imagine a chunk of jb weld going straight into the tb. the tube should get replaced.

While this is true, I'm just worried because of the hole in the piping. It's covered by tape, which isn't a great fix. I'm probably just gonna get it cut right above the hole and put the filter there. It definitely sounds different...

this isn't anything new for AEM. I used to manage a performance parts and installation shop down here and i can honestly say AEM has some of the worst build quality out there. I've seen at least 200+ AEM intakes do the same thing over the years not to mention all the issues with the rest of the AEM product line.

I have an K&N intake and when i transfered it from my 04 TL to an 05 i lost the vibration mounts. Still i proceeded with installing the way it is and it has been like that for couple good years now and no problem like that at all. The other benefit i see is that its made out of two pieces so it can be converted to a short ram as well but being that it is out of two pieces, the rubber sleeve holding them together also provides a lot of movement ability so things like that will never happen. Everytime i see this, and have seen it many times so far im glad i bought a K&N. At least the dont claim 19 whp like all the other companies doo. Basically they are selling you a bullshit product and on top of that claiming impossible gains .... how nice

I am so glad i didnt tighten that bolt down very very very hard....when you stomp on the gas due to engine roll it takes the intake with it and the rubber mount is garbage due to the heat around it....

Hence I have the bolt just not tightened...sometimes there is very little squealing but something i can live with....

hope AEM does the fix (replacement) for ya....

Wow, I was seriously going to make the AEM V2 my first performance mod. If they are such ass quality, no effing way! Any suggestions on which way to go? Fujita? Injen? K&N? Vibrant? Looking mainly for a good sound, but performance gains would be nice, too!

Hey vic...there will always be a bad apple....and because of that you cant ignore the company's reputation that they have made over the years...AEM CAI and P2R spacer + gaskets were my first mod and still strong on my car....

I would stay behind AEM's quality any effin' day....and I bet there will be thousands more like me....

AEM sent me the replacement mount within 3 days, FOR FREE...all they needed was a picture of what was broken, didn't ask for a receipt or anything else. VERY HAPPY they were able to do this!

got the part last night and hope to install it today, not sure how i can get the remainder of the mount off... any suggestions?

Same exact thing happened to me. I called AEM the rep was pretty cool about the whole thing as if this has happened so many times before (scary). He agreed to send out a new tube once he viewed the pics. So i sent them and a week later my new tube came in. But its for 04 TL, and I drive and 07 TL S, it looks like it will fit just fine, but i am looking for advice regarding the matter.

Damn lol, I just noticed this happened to my AEM V1. The bracket is completely ripped out and there's a hole in the intake tube now. Problem is I bought this intake used so I doubt AEM will replace it for me without a receipt. I'm thinking of just welding the bracket back in the tube.

I purchased my CAI Used on eBay... I called AEM and gave them my PayPal ID Transaction number and they didn't question if it was new or used. Also included date of purchase, time, invoice, trans#, etc. Anything that would make them believe it was purchased from a store.

Hopefully that helps..

I have a DC intake, was like 140 shipped off eBay. Same thing happened, but it didn't tear the tube just broke the weld, so I just left it without a mount and haven't seen any issues as or yet.
