AEM CAI - should I bother?

I'm looking for easy performance upgrades for my TL and i thought of the AEM CAI. I guess my question is: will I even notice any sort of HP gains from it or will it just make my car louder and perhaps increase my MPG?

I dont want to spend the $$ for the exhaust as well.

Do it, for the most and cheapest hp gains this is it. I loved it when I did mine. Not sure on the gas milage, but as far as the sound and how the car will feel lighter, you will love it.

i'd say do it. I didn't notice much of a MPG increase, but i did notice a weight decrease, as well as hp/torque increase (as minimal as they may seem on paper). When I'm in higher gears (4th/5th/6th), i can actually feel the car pulling when i floor it, versus before when i wouldnt' feel it that much. Also, the noise is entrancing. You will definitely find yourself flooring the car more (which could account for why most people's MPG doesn't go up that much.)

Not really a weight decrease, maybe 5 - 10lbs lighter, but the car will have more trq, whp, and better throttle responce. So that is what makes the car feel lighter, mostly the torque and the throttle responce.

I love mine. The only significant change in sound is a subtle, sweet, high-pitched whistle at times.

Did you consider K&N CAI. Where did you buy yours and for how much? Is it easy to install, I don't have any mechanical background. Thanks. Jeff

I put the intake in and I have found that it made the car quicker and the plus is plus the awsome noise it produces

I looked at AEM and Injen. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but more people on this forum seemed to be happy with AEM. I bought mine through Ptuning.com. Their shop is about 30 minutes from me.

I think I paid about $200 for mine. I don't have any mechanical training, and I did mine myself without any problems. Just take your time and follow the directions.

All the stock air intake parts that are removed in this install weigh more than three pounds. I would guess closer to ten.

Yep... all the pieces together, when taken out of the car weighed in at about 12.5 pounds.... my AEM that I installed was 2.7. SO you save about 10 pounds.... not a ton but it is something...

Did you have to do any cutting of body parts? Or is it simply an "out with the old and in with the new"? I'd prefer to not have to do any cutting in case I wanted to restore to stock when i eventually sell the car. Thanks. Steve

No body part cutting... only thing you do is drill out two rivets holding two of the pieces together. This is VERY easy to do... Save the $200 and do it yourself... If you were local I would help you out...

Ok sounds like everyone is in favor of this mod...I am kinda a sally when it comes to sucking water into my engine. If I use the car as a daily driver should I be concerned about driving in the rain or snow??

To suck water and hydrolock your engine means that the ENTIRE filter must be completely submerged in water.... the top of the filter is about even with the top of the tire.... so to do it you have to drive through one deep ass puddle. Just be aware of what you are driving through, especially if you know of specific areas around you that flood (low roads)... Other than that it really is not an issue... Just be smart and aware...

Going through puddles will not cause you to suck up water. Your filter and therefore your bumper have to be submerged in water to suck up water. Even then, you may not hydrolock your engine b/c the car will most likely shut off. Then you could pull the plugs, crank the car over and shoot the water out, and then drain the oil. Hydrolocking is uncommon unless you live in flooded areas. Even your stock air box could suck up water.

Here is a link to some E-Shift Cats info and where to get it

I will echo what most say: as long as you're not silly enough to drive through STANDING water that is at least one foot deep, hydrolocking is not an issue. My performance has not been different in rain or snow.

I'm looking at the AEM V2 intake sys. Is that the one you have? Also, where do you put the battery when installing a supercharger? Is it in the trunk? And lastly, is your car wicked fast now?

Will a CAI add any low end torque to the engine? This would be beneficial to the manual trans drivers!

on the dyno sheet from AEM, it shows that there are torque gains all across the board with the most coming after 5000 rpms.

I've looked at the AEM CAI on a couple different web sites. (Tire Rack etc.) There seems to be about 5 different CAIs from AEM that come up as "fitting the 06 TL". Any thoughts on this?

Did you guys install your CAI yourselves?

Thanks for your help.

There's 4 different colors so maybe that's what's coming up in the search.

Hmmm....That might be what it is, but, from the pictures, it looks like different tube shapes and all - Not just colors.

If you're interested, check it out. I don't understand why they're all different.

i just installed the AEM intake this weekend and definitely noticed the difference, especially above 3k rpm. It's sounds stock at idle but has a nice growl when I gun it. I have a 6mt and I did notice everytime I switched gears and gunned it, I heard a whistle/hiccup. I know other people mention a whine at times, which I hear too but this little hiccup sounded weird to me. Just wanted to know if anyone else has heard this on the 6mt?

I can believe that people can feel the hp, can feel the torque. But to feel a 10lb decrease in sprung weight? You guys must have very calibrated butt-o-meters.

By the way, I know you didn't say it jmbnova (I just quoted your ten pound measurement), but to quote a weight decrease as being one of the advantages of a CAI is a little much no? That's like me listing my diet as part of my "upcoming TL mods". Hell, if I lose 30 lbs...I won't need that SC...

OMG!!!!! I found the cheapest mod Ever!!!!!

Everyone, take a major dump!, replace your shoes with sandals, replace thick clothes with thin clothes, make sure you cut your hair or better yet shave it! Also cut carbs out of your diet so your body wont retain water.

All said and done you'll cut out around 20lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cheapest and bestest and easiest mod ever!!!!
After doing all that you'll kick TLs butts that run NOS(tm) !!!110011100111!!!
