When a DVD-A is NOT a DVD-A.....

Let me start by saying that I love DVD-As when they are mixed properly in 5.1 sound format like the Acura demo disc. But man, I wonder how many true DVD-A discs are there in the market?
I haven't bought a CD in probably 5 years, but I finally decided to purchase Shania Twain's Up!!! and The Corrs In Blue DVD-As from Tower Records. What a waste of money!!!! Shania Twain's DVD-A is nothing more than the regular CD (2 channel) burned in DVD-A format. The Corrs DVD-A has 2 songs at the end were you can truly appreciate and differentiate the 5.1 sound, otherwise the rest of the DVD-A is the same as a 2 channel CD. How in the world are the Music companies ever going to make this format popular if what they are committing right now is plain fraud by just reburning the 2 channel CD tracks in a DVD-A disc? It just plain sucks!!!! :angryfire

Is there some nomenclature on the DVD that would have warned you about the tracks not all being 5.1 or do you literally have to listen to them and notice the difference yourself?

If there is no way of telling the difference, it sure seems like an underhanded thing to do..

I hear you -- same with DVD-V

In the "Ladies and Gentlemen" (George Michael), this thing said DD 5.1 and when I listen to it, it's just 2 channel with the same two channels on the two front speakers and the two rear speakers -- what a jip!

I guess you have to get a review before buying it.

Check HERE for ratings of the surround properties of DVD-A's and SACDs. Remember, the SACDs will not play in the TL/RL.

Towards the top of the page there is a link to the forum section with all of the detailed reviews that generated the chart. Check it out. Running on Empty is new, but there are a lot of comments.

Actaully, here's the link to the section:

oblio98, thanks for the link. I wished I had known about it before I purchased my DVD-As.

I've posted it before, but many seemed to have missed it. Feel free to add comments there about the discs you bought that sucked (or were great). The more opinions, the better!
