has anyone bothered to RTA the stock setup to find the answer?
and is it the HU that cuts it or does the stock amp handle it?

It was done a long time ago, you're going to have to search way back. There was a more recent one done of a TSX HU on DIYMA which I believe to be the same unit.
From what I remember it's fairly linear with volume or at least in steps but it's not on or off.

will do
yeah i'm just trying to figure out from which volume level it starts to dial it down
MS-8 doesn't like anything below 35 and i have a gut feeling some bass is already cut by then

Matt, are you referring to this one?
http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/...surements.html
cause the guy says his output is 4V pre-amp
that's nothing like our 0.9V

I honestly don't remember. I believe the test on DIYMA was newer but I could be wrong. Way back in '04-'05 someone did a test on the TL on here.
I couldn't get the MS8 to work without a line driver. Even if you calibrated anyway the music just wasn't loud enough. I did a line driver to get rid of the issue and calibrated around 27. It also reduces the chances of noise being picked up along the run to the amp as long as the line driver is up front.
