Question Weird problem with HFL seizing voice-control?

I had a weird one happen this morning and I'm wondering if anyone knows the solution. I was driving to work and used the HFL to dial my cell phone. Worked OK, but the sound dropped out suddenly at one point. I figured maybe it was a bad signal and tried to hang up, but the HFL would not let me hang up the phone. There was no sound at all—no static, no background hiss, nothing. It came back on a minute or two later, so I hung up and redialled.

That all worked fine. After I hung up the second time, a song came on XM that I didn't recognize and I hit the "Audio" button to bring up the radio display to see who was singing it. But it didn't display the radio stuff—instead, it brought up the phone display to show which buttons were for picking up and hanging up. The Navi voice-control buttons were also disabled; if I hit one, a message came on the screen saying, "The Navigation system voice recognition software cannot be used while another unit is using the audio system." (Or something very similar to that.) No matter what buttons I hit—Navi voice buttons, HFL buttons, redial the cell phone and hang up, disconnect the cell phone's Bluetooth connection—nothing worked. I finally stopped at a red light for a few minutes and turned off the car, and when I turned the car back on everything was back to normal.

I'm guessing that the HFL somehow froze when I had that problem with the first phone call and that the car somehow thought that the phone was in use all that time—but if that were so, why was I able to hear the music playing on the radio?

Does anyone have a solution for this? Turning the car off worked OK this time, but it would be impractical if this happened out on the Interstate somewhere. I've had the car since 2004 and have never had this occur. (I did have the flatlined temperature display issue once and cured it by pulling the fuse, but that did not happen this time when I turned the car back on at the red light.)

Thanks in advance.

BTW, I should add (since it won't let me edit the earlier post) that the problem is not the same as the one noted in the 3G Garage. The problem described there involved the HFL seizing total control—those posters couldn't even use the radio. I was still able to use the radio, I just couldn't use the "Audio" screen to see XM information and couldn't use the voice control.

I had a similar problem in that the phone HFL would not let go. It just stayed in the "In Use" mode. Nothing worked until I shut the car off and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes.

I didn't wait nearly that long—perhaps 20 to 30 seconds. I guess nobody around here knows what causes it. Too bad. I haven't had it happen again, but I also haven't used my phone in a while either.

I've had similar issues recently. Hitting end call on my phone was the only way I could disconnect. I've noticed that the few times its happened, my phone was usually almost out of battery life. How much battery life do you guys have when this happens? Could that have something to do with it? Not enough juice to push the HFL?

You need to install an HFL Delay Box P/N 39050-SEP-307. There was a TSB out for this problem and the only way to fix it is with the delay box. I just installed mine yesterday; so far the problem hasn't resurfaced. I also upgraded to the 2006 HFL Unit, boy is it so much better! Response times are a multitude times faster and now it works with my phone (SE K790a).
