Voice Prompts/HandsFreeLink

In regards to a 2006 TL:

I'm assuming the the voice prompts and HandsFreeLink are different features. Correct?

I opened up the ceiling where the HFL unit is and to my surprise it was disconnected. I've red a bad unit will drain and maybe ruin batteries.

When I scroll through the MID and at the HandsFreeLink, when I press the reset/enter button, it states "booting up" and doesn't go away, but also doesn't interfere with anything else as I've read it has others.

Also, there are really four voice type buttons, I assume the ones in the front are for the actual HandsFreeLink and the rear buttons are for the other voice prompts. Correct?

It also doesn't appear the there is a specific TSB for the 2006 model year. Correct?

Should I just assume that the HFL unit is bad and disconnect it, again? Are there improved HFL units? Is eBay OK for a used one, or are prices reasonable for the 3rd Generation. Mine is marked with a P/N# 83251SEP A021AA YR240L ---- 9.16.05 ---- SW Version 1.1.0

Thanks!

Also, when I run the diagnostics on the Navi screen, the NG is lit up read.

After connecting the HFL back up, it is green ... it was red too before.

I had this exact same problem with the MID being stuck on "Booting Up". Took it to the dealer and it is infact a bad unit. My dealer would have charged $97 just to unplug it (it would overheat and use slight battery power) but I just had it replaced for $297 (a decent deal). Luckily, the HFL and the Voice Control are two separate modules, so if you decide to disconnect the Bluetooth module, you will still have access to your voice control.

I should also mention that when they took my module out, the tech specialist showed me how corroded it was, which could have shorted out the circuit/fuse if I had left it in much longer.

The MID isn't really stuck, if I press the reset/enter button again it goes away. It just never gets past the "booting up" when that is attempted.

Thanks for the reply, I've been reading more and seems the connections can become corroded. May go remove mine and bring it in and inspect it.

Yes.

Yes. The rear toggles are for voice-commands of the Navi, audio, and climate control.
You can use voice controls for the audio and climate control without activating the Navi-- just pull the voice command activation toggle twice rather than once.

There's a long thread on the failed Bluetooth/HFL units and some attempts to repair.
Ultimately, you may want to buy a new HFL for about $160 from one of our vendors here-- I bought mine from oemacuraparts.com (Acura of Peoria).

Welcome to AZ.
