Voice - Detailed Nav Directions?

I read somewhere on here that the nav system can be changed to provide turn by turn directions; like instead of turn right, it says turn right onto street name

Is that only on the 07s ?

My '05 Navi just says "stay left," "turn right," take the 2nd exit on the right," etc.-- it doesn't say the street/freeway names.
The split-screen does show the proper street/freeway name, though.

It's in there somewhere. I've seen it. Same screen you can choose Male/Female voice.

I have yet to try this though......

OK. I tried it on the way home. If you are on the Map and press Setup, you have the setting (already forgot what it is called), but it has Min, Normal, and Max. If you set it on Max, it says the street names. This is on an '07. It said "Washington" and "Centre". I did not have a chance to try "Chickatawbut Road" yet.

It's called "Voice Prompts" I think. Set it "max".

Sorry.

It's "Guidance Prompts" under SETUP. Set it to "Max".

Sorry, Timmahh, don't know. I've got the '07, so thats what I see. The Max setting for detailed directions was posted elsewhere.

Personally, I tend to set it "Normal" or "Min"; I don't want to hear how much Bitchin' Betty talks at "Max".

The only guidance options I see are on setup screen 3 to select male or female; the 04 - 06 nav system has abillity to read (or try to read...) items not already recorded; would have been nice to have this feature enabled

Holy crap - I didn't know that! (only had 07 TL three days, though!). At the default level, she DOES say freeway numbers ("turn right onto 680 North") but not street names. I'll have to try this. Thanks for the tip.

What did impress me about the Navi is that it will recognize verbal street names when accepting addresses; I say the street name, it lists all possible matches, and just have to confirm. That's pretty cool!

Just jumped in the car and took her for a spin. Set voice prompts to 'max', and sure enough, she reads out street names! But only SOME. I could make no sense of why she would read some and not others. Most of the time, she just said 'take next right' or 'second left' or whatever. But once in a while, she'd say, 'turn right on Willow'. Very odd. I'll go on a longer journey, and see if I can figure out a pattern.

I noticed she says it when it is up and coming, but not the next immediate turn. She says, "In a half mile, turn right onto Bedford St". Then she says, "In a quarter mile, turn right onto Bedford St". Then she says, "Take your next right turn". If there is time, she says it. If it's the next immediate one, she does not say it.

At least, this is what I've noticed.

I think you are right. If your route involves many turns, close together, you never hear the street names. I think you get the full street name .5 miles ahead, then a turn warning (only) 0.25 miles ahead. I've switched my voice prompting back to 'normal', because it's too intrusive on max. It's totally dumb that they don't read out the name at least once at 'normal' level. Hearing the street name allows you to confirm what you are looking at when you see the actual street sign - without having to look at the nav display.

I've found the display of turns to be very good (I like the split screen, with off-ramp display on the right, etc) but the voice prompting seems very weak. She gives you the final turn command well ahead of the turn. If you look at the screen, you can see the countdown in feet (which is also very good) but if you rely on voice alone, you'd be taking the wrong turns. I compare this to my Garmin Nuvi 350, which gives turn instructions 'right on cue'. I also find the map display to be nowhere near as good as my Nuvi - even though the Nuvi has a postage-stamp sized screen, by comparison. The Nuvi gives a 3-d perspective, and somehow manages to show you where you are much better.

I have mine set to max and she says everything. I like my friend's G35X when it's time to make a turn it chimes I think that's cool. But the funny thing is from time to time he misses the turn anyway.
