V710: Futuredial cable questions

OK, as you guys probably have figured out by now, I have a V710. I have also had no luck connecting it to Motorola's PhoneTools.

So, I went to Radio Shack today and picked up a Futuredial connection cable that theoretically can be used with the V710. I did not purchase any Futuredial sofware with the cable.

Here's my questions:
  1. Has anyone successfully used the Futuredial 170-0785 cable with the V710?
  2. Can I use this cable with PhoneTools?
  3. If so, where can I download the USB driver for the cable?
Thanx!

Try this...

I downloaded the phonetools from this site..

http://www.bvrp.com/customers/motorola/upgrade/US/

This is an upgrade only so you will have to have the software on your computer in the first place.. Keep in mind you only need to enter your personal data and not change anything at the bottom.. Don't pick a phone or anything where it say software..

Let this install and update it.. To update it right click the phone in your system tray and pick live update.. do this about 3 times..

Now that's easy enough... you might run into a problem with the drivers and the computer not finding the phone.. On your C:\Program Files\mobile PhoneTools\Inf folder you have most drivers for all phones.. have it search that area to see if it find one it can use.. If you are having problems with this post your windows version and connection type.(usb, serial)..

To sum it up make sure your computer has the drivers for the phone(modem).. Download the software from the top link without changing anything other than your personal information.. Connect the cable and go.. I am sure you all will have questions and that's ok.. Please try to post as much detail as you can about what your are experiencing.. I really hope this helps.. I know alot of you have tons of contacts..

Scuba629 - Thanks for the assist!

I tried everything you suggested a few days ago when my first USB cable was delivered (and after trying the BT connection, of course!)

My V710 has always been successfully identified by my computers ("Bluetooth Modem" for the BT connection, "Motorola USB Modem" for the USB cable connection).

The problem occurs at the last stage - Mobile PhoneTools responds back:
Mobile phone not available.
Please verify that your mobile phone is connected and powered on.
....
Now, my mobile phone IS connected and powered on. In fact, I can pull up a status screen on the "Bluetooth Connection Status" and see that data has been received AND sent over the BT modem. Also, I can surf the web through my V710 using boltjames' totally excellent posting, so I know that the Bluetooth connection is valid.

I also know that data is flowing both ways on the "Motorola USB Modem" since I saw the query / response being done by PhoneTools during the USB modem detection window, same as what I saw for the Bluetooth detection.

I am running Windows XP Home, Service Pack 1. Mobile PhoneTools is Version 2.21e. The Motorola USB Modem driver is Version 2.0.0.3, dated 03-FEB-04.

GotJazz,
Someone on phonescoop successfully linked their computer as follows:

Mobile Phone Tools contains the driver but doesn't install it correctly.

The fix:

1. Install MPT and update repeatedly until all the updates are installed (currently 2.21f, however that may change). Do not install the phone from MPT when it asks.

2. Go to Control Panel/Add Hardware. Let it find the phone.

3. When it asks where to find the driver, select the option to tell it the directory. Then point it to the directory "inf" in the Mobile Phone Tools directory. This should be C:\Program Files\Mobile Phone Tools\inf.

4. The utility should install three drivers: Motorola Phone, Motorola USB Modem, and I believe Motorola CDMA 1X Modem.

5. The start MPT. Select menu, and select new phone. Plug in the phone at the correct point and it installs the V710, which it can now find.

Hope this helps.

Stephen - Thanks for the assistance!

I just tried what you suggested. The V710 only registered as a "Motorola USB Modem" when I did the "Find New Hardware". The "Motorola Phone" and "Motorola CDMA 1X Modem" did not appear as part of the computer-detected installation.

I did try installing the "Motorola Phone" and "Motorola CDMA 1X Modem" manually, but they didn't appear to be functional.

Again, I did see data going both ways as PhoneTools probed the characteristics of the "Motorola USB Modem". However, when it came time to read the V710's data via PhoneTools, the program still said that the phone was not available.

This is sooo frustrating!

GotJazz,
Seems to me an uninstall of MPT and a new clean install making sure you don't install the phone from MPT when asked might clear this up. The other option is to wait for the new firmware update from Verizon, which I understand addresses this problem. It should be available in a week or two.

Why dont you use a transflash card that fits into the slot on top? You can get 125MB TF cards and then get a TF to SecureDigital adapter. That is more than enough memory I would assume.

Steven - I did all that, and then some. I went into the Device Manager and manually uninstalled all the drivers for the V710 that were installed previously (these didn't get deleted by doing a standard Windows "Uninstall Software").

I also tried installing MPT as you described on another PC that didn't have MPT previously installed. I still saw the same results.

ryder1650 - The transflash would probably work if I wanted to transfer some files to the V710. However, what I really need to do is transfer & synchronize my 300+ phone numbers from my Outlook Contacts into my V710. This is a bit more complex, and requires software such as Mobile Phone Tools to work properly.

Thanks for contacting Motorola E-mail Support Division,

I apologize for the inconveniences, I understand your frustration. And understand that you need to synchronize your device with your desktop. The V710 does work with Mobile Phone Tools 2.0 if you use the USB cable connection and therefore you will be able to synchronize your V710. We at Motorola appreciate your patience with this matter. Motorola is currently developing a patch as fast as possible that will be available for customers who own the V710 that will solve this software issue. Once the patch is loaded to your V710, the Bluetooth link will work correctly. It will be available on the first days of September. The way it is going to be distributed has not been announced yet. Once again, thank you for your patience.

For further assistance please contact our Software Support division at 1-877-331-6456 directly at ext. 2237. Our operation hours are from 8 am to 7 pm CST.

Please visit our web site: http://www.motorola.com and check our latest products.

Thanks for choosing Motorola.

Success! We have V710 contact!

Steven - Thanks again for the info ...

I finally got the V710 to work, but not in any way that I have seen anywhere on the 'Net!

I have never had MPT installed in the past, and never connected any of my previous Motorola phones to my computer before.

In a last act of desperation, I wondered if I could get my very old (3 years+) V60 phone connected via MPT. At least it would let me know that my USB cable was good for something. So, I recharged my V60 batteries for a while, and then plugged it into my computer.

My computer detected the new "Motorola USB Modem", and installed the drivers for the phone automatically. Hey, I wasn't even sure if the V60 had a USB modem, so I was pretty happy with that.

Then, I started up MPT again. It said that it couldn't detect the V60, so I went through the "Redetect" Wizard.

A few seconds and beeps later, the MPT GUI changed from a V710 to a V60. Cool! Now, for the big test ... I clicked on the Phonebook icon, and Eureka! - MPT was connected and downloading from my V60!

Alright ... The USB cable was useful. I disconnected the V60. Connected up the V710, and crossed my fingers. Again, I had to go through the "Redetect Wizard".

The MPT GUI automatically changed into a V710! That's new! I always selected that manually before. After initializing, all of the icons on the right side of the V710 GUI phone were enabled ... That's new, too!

When I started up the MPT "Phone Book", it now connected just fine. Got most of my Contacts moved over to the V710 now. WHEW!

So, it looks like I needed to get an older, easily recognized phone connected to MPT to "shake it loose" enough to recognize the V710.

Yippee! All is well!

Bet this procedure doesn't appear in the User's Guide ...

GotJazz,

I am getting here late, or I would have helped earlier.

You are using a slightly old version of Mobile Phone Tools. The current version is "F", not "E."

You are probably using E because you assumed that using the live update would update you to the current version, a normal, but in this case invalid assumption. With MPT and their version of live update, you need to keep doing updates until it tells you it has no more. It appears you stopped one update short of where you needed to be.

Good luck!

Andy - I'm just glad I got it connected finally, even though it was with 2.21e. I was pulling my hair out on this one. Does 2.21f completely solve this issue?

I don't know, because I never messed around with E!

I managed to get F working with the v710, by doing something like what someone else described in this thread with respect to properly installing the driver. The software did not do that on its own. (I had read about that on HoFo.)

Take care.
Andy
