Using Navi to get to Canada from US
Using Navi to get to Canada from US
Hello all,
So this weekend I plan on taking my TL from Massachusetts to Canada. However it doesn't look like I can pick a destination in Canada to head to? The only work-around I would know of is heading to Niagara Falls then once hitting the border switch the Navi's region over to Canada. Also once in Canada how do I change the region of the navi over to Canada?
Thanks!

You should be able to select Canada with no problem. I've programmed addresses in Montreal and Ottawa into my Navi, both by name and by address (for the latter, just type in the name of the province as you would the state), including back in the days when I had software release 3.30 (the orange disc that came with the car). I've never had to change anything when I cross the border (except as noted below). No "region" or anything of that sort. Navi coverage IS somewhat more limited than it is in the USA, but if you're crossing at Niagara Falls you shouldn't have a problem unless you head well up to the north. (Coverage of the Maritimes is quite lacking, though. Nova Scotia is non-existent except for a small sliver down near Yarmouth, and New Brunswick is only partially covered. No PEI. But if you plan to cross at Niagara Falls, you wouldn't be going anywhere near the Maritimes anyway.)
The one thing you have to adjust yourself is that it's generally recommended that you switch the Navi's units of measure to metric when you cross the border so that the directions will match the road signs, although for some stupid reason you can't also switch the MID to match.

My disc is Orange 3.71, I got it in 2008. I'm pretty sure I won't be heading all the way north. I'll certainly be within an hr or two of Niagara Falls though. So I won't have to change anything? What year is your car 1995hoo? I have a 2006. Aren't there differences between -2006 and 2007+?

Try searching the "Places" database by name for the Royal York hotel in Toronto (it might be listed under "Fairmont Royal York" or under "Royal York," I'm not sure which). That's a well-established destination that hasn't changed names recently and so ought to be a good way to confirm that you shouldn't have any issues. Or just move your map to Toronto or Hamilton or somewhere, zoom in, select a destination, and have it plot you a route.
Southern Ontario coverage within an hour or two of Niagara Falls ought to present no problems. I haven't checked to see how far north the coverage goes in Ontario, but when I said "well up to the north" I was expecting that it probably doesn't have very good coverage once you get past North Bay. I have not confirmed that, though. My old disc (3.30 that came with the car) didn't include Mont-Tremblant—coverage ended up near Mirabel Airport northwest of Montreal—but my newer disc does include that area and Quebec City.
