USA Spec in the 2005 RL

OK, so this is the TL forum. But it seems that you guys have MUCH more experience and activity over here than in the RL forum.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, I have seen some folks post that the USASpec PA11 HON2y is compatible with a 2005 RL. Using the instructions, it says that it is only compatible with the 2006 (http://www.discountcarstereo.com/pdf/pa11-hon2y.pdf). See page 6.

I am talking to a local car stereo company that says there is no solution for my 2005. While I have never taken apart a car, I am very handy with other electronics. I build all my home computers.... Is there any possibility that I could do this myself? If so, has anyone put together a step by step instruction manual? I dont want to take apart my $50k car, just to ruin the trim.

Any help or pointers would be HUGELY appreciated! TIA.

Look over this thread: 3G TL Audio & Electronics FAQ

Then follow the links to the original USA Spec PA11-HON2 thread. There are installation instructions somewhere in there (page 13 or so ), but again this will be 3G TL specific. I would think RL interior is somewhat similar. The best solution for you is to find someone with the Helm manual scans in the RL forum for exact details.

It's very possible for a DIY install. Good luck!

That thread was really good, just seem to be stuck on how to get access to the radio. the silver side clips dont seem to want to come out....

Oh well, maybe I can find someone who can actually install this thing for me. Let me know if you know of anyone in the Atlanta area who can do it!

Thanks.

the USAspec should work as the radions were not change in the RL until 05, due to the redesign. On the RL, you may be able to look under the right corner of the dash and see the radio plugs and try to do it from there if you can fit.

If you notice the two silver strips on the right and left, there is no easy way to get under them as they are molded around the countour of the dash.

Here is another picture, where you will notice how tight the fit is:

Is there a specialized tool I should use.

BTW - thanks for all of the responses here! Its good to see how highly trafficed this forum is.

Judging from the pictures, it seems like you will need to remove the side trims and shifter area before getting to the trim near the head unit.

There is a special tool that is recommended called the KPT trim kit (?) that you can purchase online and at your dealer to help you remove the trim.

For the 3G TL, we start at the rear (near the center storage console) with a flat head screwdriver/butter knife wrapped in a microfiber towel and work our way towards the head unit.

Here is a useful thread: Comptech Short Shifter Install/pics
