Upgrading Navi Screen

Have an 07 TLS, took it in for service today and they loaned me a 2012 TL w/ navi. As expected the screen in the 2012 has a much high resolution then my 07. So the thought came to me, why not update mine to this one?

My question to you all, yes i tried searching, is does the 2012 screen a direct fit to my 2007?

Anyone with schematics/wiring diagram to both the 2007 and 2012 would be much appreciated. I want it to be plug and play but something is telling me its not. Just thought i would see.

Anyone have an answer? Thanks all!

you can update the screen as you please but you're forgetting the driver behind the screen. the new screen will not do you any good EVEN IF you got it working with 3G TL system because the thing driving the screen will not support the new resolution or graphics upgrade.

you cant replace your television 42in 720p lcd panel with a 1080p lcd panel because EVEN IF you got it wired probably, the hardware will not support the new panel

Only upgrade that is feasable is one that will give you a brighter screen that uses the same backlight technology.

I believe that all of the pre 12 models are CCFL (Cold Cathode Flourescent) and the 12+ are LED backlight. LED backlight will typically result in a brighter longer lasting backlight source that uses less power and generates significantly less heat. CCFL and LED are not interchangable unless you are willing to do a lot of work to change out the coverter board (if it is even possible).

It also doesn't hurt that the newer screens are set futher back into the dash

Do you think it is possible to get the entire navigation and audio system from the 2012 TL into a 3G, specifically the 2007? This may be a ridiculous question but is it possible to change the entire radio and nav unit to the new one but use the existing switches and buttons, thus keeping appearance the same but only changing the hardware? This would also enable a USB output rather than an ipod only output and give us the lines on the reverse camera...

with that being said; there are many different ways to skin a cat.

I think it would be easier to do a carpc.
Or even an android tablet retrofit.

there are several examples here on this forum.

^Thanks Justn, I've looked into the carpc and i considered doing an ipad integration as well using a jailbroken iphone to wirelessly tether 3g to the ipad to eliminate the need for a separate 3G plan.

The most difficult part seems to be the bracket to hold it and where to put the thing. The ipod integration works decently well and a hardwired aux cable would always do the trick, but creating a bracket that is not in the way of the shifter or passenger and is sleek enough to look stock seems to be the issue.
