Time for new components. But which ones?
Time for new components. But which ones?
Foreword: I did search before posting this and did find many threads on similar topics. However, they were all 3+ years old, so I figured it'd be OK to start a fresh one
Currently, I'm running Pioneer TS-D1720c components (rated at 60w RMS) passively, and they are being fed 150w RMS from my bridged Alpine MRP-F300 4-channel amp. The majority of the reviews I read said the tweeters were pretty harsh. I took my chances, and they were right. So I removed those awhile ago because I just couldn't stand them any longer. I planned on getting new tweets only, but I decided I'd rather get all new comps because the mids aren't anything to write home about either. They can be quite harsh as well at higher volumes.
I really want to get some input from the Azine audiophiles because there's just so many component options out there, and listening to them in person is not really possible for me.
Some (perhaps unnecessary) background info:
-I am taking the signal pre-amp and sending it to an RF-BLD line driver before going to the amp.
-I have full intentions of running my next component set passively as well.
-The tweeters will be mounted in the stock dash locations (unless the components allow the tweeter to be mounted on the woofer like a coaxial).
-I primarily listen to hardcore, fast-paced, jams (i.e. The Devil Wears Prada, The Ghost Inside, Bring Me The Horizon, etc). Trance and Dubstep also make an occasional appearance inside my cabin.
So here's what I'm looking for:
-A component system that will actually utilize the 150w RMS (or at least more than 60) that I have available.
-4 Ohm Impedance.
-A tweeter that is silky smooth and not overbearing.
-A deep & powerful mid woofer that has lots of punch and kick (whapow!).
My budget:
-Not a penny over $300.
-Not a penny.
Brands/Models that I've been researching and/or that have peaked my interest:
-Image Dynamics: CTX65CS, CXS64 V2
-Massive Audio: CK6, RK6 (the V version? Whichever ones that have the new tweets)
-CDT Audio: Soooo many different models. Headaches ensue.
-Focal: Overhyped? Harsh highs?
I'm definitely not limiting myself to those brands I've listed. Those are just some that I've read about in other car audio forums. And I know every set of ears is different, but this will at least give me an idea.
Open to any suggestions, thanks!

Not sure if these are a direct fit (probably will require some modifications to the door mounts for the woofer) but the polk audio db6501 is what I am getting to replace my stock components. The woofers have great frequency response and are passively crossed in line. Definitely under your budget, I was gonna scoop them up via crutchfield.com but now they are $50 more after the holidays. Here take a look!

***Side note, if you aren't already aware, most components sold by polk, alpine, pioneer, etc. have a warranty but you can only gain access to that warranty if you purchase through an authorized dealer. I was looking to save money through amazon but then I found out that polk doesn't authorize ANY sellers on amazon...so no warranty through amazon sales

And yes, I'm aware of the warranty issues with amazon. I'll keep that in mind, thanks.
You had the ID CTX65CS, correct? How would you say those compare to other components in that price range today? You mentioned on an old thread that the tweeter gets harsh after 75w. I'm pushing 150w, so maybe they wouldn't be a good fit? I know those are at the very low end of my price range, but I'm curious.
460 will get it something considerable nicer..... awesome drivers

I've been doing some research on the JL C5 650s. They look really nice, and I do enjoy my 10w3v3 (for whatever that's worth). But I can't find them within my price range anywhere. I'd love to know where IHC saw them for under $300.
It was down to the JL C5 650s and the ID CXS64 V2s. I found a BRAND NEW set of CXS64 V2s for $240 on eBay. Offered him $200 and he accepted! I'm excited.
I hear the midbass is insane on these woofers, and the tweeter is not harsh at all (same tweeter as the ID XS-65). Thanks for all the suggestions, fellas.
