Exclamation Subwoofer Rattle

Hey guys- I have a brand new '07 TL no-navi and I am having rattling problems with my subwoofer whenever I am listening to music with high frequency bass. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it covered under my warranty? I appreciate your responses!

Thanks.

You can take it back to the dealer and they will/should take care of it..they did for me....also some of the rattle on my car (06) was coming from the baby seat clips..I'm sure the 07 has them as well.....the plastic covers were making rattle sounds.....try opening/pop them up and see if that helps lessen the rattling...

everything ended up being ok.....I put some insulating strips in where the baby seat plastic covers were and no more rattles.....
but do take the TL to the dealer and have them insulate/dampen the back speaker deck and you should be fine......good luck

I'm having the same issue -- what did the dealer do to resolve the issue?

My Acura dealer must be a lazy slug. He told me that it was very common and basically the way it has to be. There is another thread about this on here, and it shows how to put insulation in to stop the vibrating noises. That was an easy fix for me.

Ask your dealer to look up TSB 04-043. This problem has been around since 2004 on the TLs. In the TSB the dealer tech is instructed how to resolve rattles from the rear shelf. All work should be covered under warrenty. PM me with your email address and I can send you a copy of TSB 04-043.

I took my 07 in for a rattle.. I was talked down to, shown a parts breakout of the rear deck, told it was not the speaker but there was a woofer (I think he actually said wuffer) in the middle and it will vibrate and was normal (isn't that what they always say when one takes something in under warranty).

I was a bit disappointed that they didn't ask me for more detail or maybe, ask if I had a specific CD or whatever that would make the annoying rattle? All they had to do was call me up and I would have said CD 3, Track 7. The radio was set to XM when I got back in the the car, not CD, which was actually my Dice ipod interface, set to random, who knows what was playing for them.

Anyway, I just let it be as I'll be removing the rear undercover to attach leads for my Basslink so I'll just 'fix it myself'.

My advice, when you take your car into the dealer, get someone in the car and DEMONSTRATE the rattle before you leave the dealership.

Cool

My 06 was driving me nut's! I hated the dull sound and the rattle! Take a peek at what I did. Works great. Can't see a thing. Didn't give up ANY trunk space! Take a look =

Here is the lame excuse that service gave me on the subwoofer / rear-deck rattles:
1) The audio system is overpowered for the speakers, so see #2.
2) You can't set the bass or the subwoofer over +4 (which it still rattles even under that).

They basically told me to deal with it and if we really persist they will take it apart and pad it. What a joke.

I've got news for them... They WILL fix it at some point. I won't let up until it is perfect, so they might as well bite the bullet and get 'er done!!!

My dealer's service told me the same thing. What a bunch of idiot I have given up on them, because they could neither hear (even when it is so obvious and audible) nor fix ANY rattle.

The service department at Jay Wolfe Acura in Kansas City was GREAT when it came to fixing mine. I told them about it and they knew exactly what I was talking about. Some TL's do it and some don't. They took out my back seat and installed insulation as well as tighted down all of the seat belt screws and mine sounds great.

I'm going to take in mine next week. They fixed the most noticeable rattle on the 3rd brake light by using some kind of rubber extension.

I finally did took it to the dealer on the rattle issue, at the end of day1, the dealer said no problem with the subwoofer the technician did ran sample CD and everythng works fine. I was like what the..****. Then I got the service advisor and had him sit in the car and I place the CD track that I had only then he understood the problem is still there. So left the car with the to fix it. On day2, they did some insulation under the rear flooting speakers and that DID IMPROVE the quality and reduced rattling. Nonetheless, I still hear little rattling on the high frequency bass tracks....

I have a 08 TLS, and I HATE HATE to blast the system, as it sounds like shIt....

I miss my FX, the bass was clear and beautiful..no rattle.

I just really don't want to gut everything out and start dynamating it. Freaken Acura, the rear deck is already horribly supported, why would you put 3 speakers in it

I had the exact same problem too! After my third visit back to the Acura Dealer, I was pissed and told them to do anything possible to fix the sub rattle. They ordered me a new deck lid which did nothing and then decided it was the middle seatbelt causing it to rattle. Just got it back and it sounds a lot better.... but not amazing... I am still embarrassed to crank it up with my friends in the car because it still rattles!!! wow... what a sh*tty problem!

Also- both of my doors seems to rattle as well which get really annoying!

Anyone else seem to completely fix this problem?

to summarize AGAIN what I did.. 1. remove center seat belt coil and dont put it back. 2. install bolts to squeeze the rear deck together. 3. seal off holes for better sound. 4. leave off underneath cover to enlarge box effect from having a larger trunk. 5. woofer still bottoms out with high volume or lots of bass and therefore sounds like a rattle, but its just a weak subwoofer. replace sub to get rid of sub clipping.

That's a very unique way of doing it but pretty cool. Coupling the upper to the lower. How well does it work?

It works really good so far. It reduced about 90% of the rattle on songs with heavy bass. I think the other 10% is coming from the woofer itself and maybe one other place that I have not been able to find because of the woofer making some clipping sounds. BUT with the rear deck cover re-installed, I cant hear anything rattling except on some songs from the woofer itself. So, other than the woofer, I have not heard any rattles since I have done this work with the cover installed. So, if there was/is something else rattling, its not coming from the rear deck cover because the deck cover is insulating any remaining rattles. At least so far that I have heard...

So I think its quite clear that in my case the rear deck was not rattling against the glass. If so, then the cover wouldnt be insulating any remaining rattle noises, and I wouldnt have heard it with the cover OFF.

I also found that the cable of the emergency release pull lever as seen in the first picture, was vibrating against the metal deck and it was causing a rattling noise. The rubber on that cable is pretty hard and if the deck is vibrating, it can make a rattling noise and that was the first thing I fixed because I had touched it and a good portion of the rattle stopped after that. Then I removed the middle seat belt and that took out more.. and then I ended up squeezing the rear deck with those bolts. And that took out the rest. See, that rear deck is made up of at least 2 sheets of metal that appear to be bonded together in some manner. And I think thats where the problem lies, in my case.

I wrapped the seat belt tensioner up in a small towel and stuck it in the groove where the top of the shock is. haha Am I slacker or what. But hey it worked. And I didnt cut away any of the seat belts permanently.

btw, no one has mentioned this, but I think part of the reason why the rear has limited high frequencies is 2 fold. #1, The head rests block a lot of the higher freq's. #2. the speakers are a full range speaker with no tweeter. If I was totally 100% a.r., then I would remove the head rests completely. But I think I can over come the head rest handicap with fading and such. Plus I just got some new 6.5 speakers that are 4 ohm with a separate tweeter, but since I still have the factory system, man the woofer on these speakers barely move. But when I saw them at the retailer, they were bouncing all over the place on deck power! So it just needs more power. (so stay tuned, I can fix that.). But I think all these factory speakers are all 2 ohms with the exception of the sub (I think). So anyway, when you up the ohms from 2 to 4 on the speaker, you essentially 1/2 the power on an already under powered system.

the reason I installed teh bolts, was because after I removed the seat belt tensioner, I was trying to find the remaining rattles. And without pressing down on the deck, I just started to touch things and I moved my head from one end of the deck to the other and underneath and on top to see where the remaining rattles were coming from. Anyway, I noticed that by squeezing with my hand the upper and lower decking, that the rattle stopped. notice I did not apply a downward force on the rear deck because that always stops the rattle noises and I could not simulate a downward force 24x7. So, I just squeezed the upper and lower deck without pressing down. And for some reason it took out a like almost the rest of the rattle. So, I simulated the squeezing by a nut and bolt. It works. not sure why.. and dont really care. haha but it works. I was actually surprised that the drivers side was basically ok. Only the passenger side was making noise. i mean since the river side is basically the same as the passenger side it seemed like the drivers side should do it too. But it didnt. At least it didnt do it much. I think I had 2 bolts left over and just for grins, I did install 1 bolt on the drivers side, but I only did it as a precaution so i wouldn't have to rip it all back apart. And that reminds me. I wish i could have done my shocks while I had the back seat off! haha Oh well, next time will be much faster!

btw, notice the upper and lower deck where the bolts are. I bent the deck by torquing down the bolt. So I got a good squeeze on it. yuppers.

There are three bolts at the back of the seat bottom, start there.

I found a new rattle. It may be one of the same one's I had. But overall it doesnt sound as bad as it did, so I dont think my efforts for for not, but the main primary rattle is still there. So it must be coming from the cover itself because its loud and like in my face.. I'm thinking either the plastic around the woofer or like someone had mentioned in another post, it may be hitting the back glass. I gotta get in there again this weekend.

As for removing the back seat, remove the cushions first. There is 1 bolt on the passender side in the groove between the lower cushion and the back rest. Then on the front side of each cushion there is a pull lever to release the seat. Then the cushions come right out. Then to remove the backrest, behind the head rest there is a SLIT where you insert a socket and extension. Just loosen the one on the left and the right, and remove a few bolts at the bottom of the back rest that were hidden by the seat cushions, and then lift vertically and it will slide off the bolts. But it is tight. So I used my foot and knee for leverage and lifted. Then I worked it out.

If you have aftermarket subs it will still rattle.
