Subwoffer Flutter?

So I've noticed that with some types of bass causes my sub to make kind of a fluttering noise. I think it might be that the port is too big for my sub. Its my friends old box cut in half and the sealed up, but I only have 1 12" MTX Thunder 4500. He has the other half to the box, I would just have to buy a board to seal it up. So is this what is causing the flutter? or am I way off track lol. If it matters I have an LOC too.

anybody?
Maybe I can word it better. The high notes sound great and really tight, however the low notes sound muddy and just kind of quiet. Is this a problem with the LOC not letting enough of the low notes through or should I just try to tune the gain again?

You're probably unloading the driver (going too far below the res freq of the system). There's much more to it than just putting a speaker in a box especially when you are talking about a ported system. You really should get the specs for the sub you have and then build/purchase a correctly sized enclosure. Anything else is just guessing and will absolutely have downfalls.

This would be a good place to start for getting enclosure size recommendations

Is there a way to tell if the box is too big? I have all the measurements of my current box. And I got this manual off of MTX's website and some of the info is different then that link so I'm pretty confused lol.

no what was said that ported box can only pay so low before you have this sound...port nosie. Find out what MTX said and what sloop of xover 6-12-18 or 24 db over point should be used. Also what power is your amp RMS not peak sometime you are just over powering the sub. Ported box's are allot bigger than sealed so if you just cover the port it will sound like crap

Make sure your amp is tuned right also....if your amp has an adjustable gain that's improperly set that can cause extra unwelcomed 'ad libs'!
