first, thank fate for disabling the weak stock sub, 2nd go and get an entry-level setup (sub/amp). Just about anything dropped into the trunk will far surpass the stock sub.

i don't mind the stock sub at all. no trunk rattle and on setting 6 its enough bump for me. never was a fan of the huge thump.

Upgrading the sub is not just about thump. That's for people who don't know how to tune their system. I run a pair of 15s and sure, you can make them thump and flex the windshield but that's not the purpose. They add the low end that's missing that the stock sub can't play. They play the sub bass notes with less distortion and a fuller sound that actually blends with the front stage better than the stock sub will. Go overkill on the sub and set the gains properly to make it sound good.

Having a system that can truly play the lowest notes the music has to offer effortlessly will remind you of what you've been missing all along. You're just extending the frequency response of the system. If you're going ported, tune it low. If you're going sealed, use a larger than spec box. I've come to realize that factory spec boxes are just for big power handling to mechanically protect the sub. Put it in a larger box and you will get a flatter response, less distortion, and require less power for the same volume. The same goes for a larger sub. It gives you a ton of benefits with the only downside being the space it takes up.

One more thing, it's an assumption the OP's sub is the problem. Hopefully it's not further up the chain in which case an aftermarket sub will not work either.
