There certainly aren't any firmware upgrades that would help average specifications in original equipment. I feel the same way about the stereo, it is creamy smooth but has no real punch. I've some to the conclusion that I could get enough mids to highs out of the stock stereo with a decent punchy sub that would really 'ground' everything else on top of it. I think that might be the easiest way to really give the system some life, but I don't know what the perfect combo of stockness and performance and cost is.

MichiganRich has a good first step, and really it does make a big difference to add an aftermarket SQ sub to this setup. It adds that punch that your missing and may be enough to keep you happy. If not, then the next step might be to add more amps to drive the other speakers.

Also try listening to some good DVD-A disks as some make great use of the LFE channel and you end up with thumping bass.
