SPL Testing

I got the SPL application for my iPhone so I decided to do see what the noise level inside the TL is at various times...

most interesting was the level I got on the radio. With the stock system plus my sub setup, the loudest I got was about 111 dB. Not to say that the SQ at that level with all of the stock gear is that great, but 111 dB is impressive. Lots of it comes from the sub, I'm sure.

I'm curious for anyone that has done SPL tests for your setup - what's your max SPL and what gear do you have?

Someone did an extensive SPL testing of the ELS system .. i think it's in the FAQ's or the Garage....

111dB is pretty dang loud, this is a peak reading, right? I don't know much about sound/decibels/etc but I know higher pitched/frequency sound is more irritating (painful) to human ears (i.e. mine) than low sounds ... i wonder that if 111dB is a measure of all the sound energy output from the ELS system (peak output) .. how much of it is the low frequencies like you suggest...

HAHAHAHA...141.1...toasty VC's though... :/ i'd rather listen to 120+ db's of rock and roll in my face with the windows down and the system...turned up!

80 on PCH with windows down and everything is crystal clear...studio quality...concert volumes!!! I hate cars and personally vow for the insane volumes with clarity!

i took the measurement with an 'unweighted' profile. I should take it at C-rated profile to see what I get. C weighting is supposed to be the most appropriate for music.

141.1 though, that's damn loud. "Concert" level is 110+, and I stress, 110 with my system (nothing special) although not distorted per se, everything does sound pretty smashed.

I've bragged about your system so much my friends are always asking if I've gotten the box yet. It is the best sounding and loudest system I've personally heard. Just wish I could afford those mids and highs you have.

i got 148.0dB out of mine....3 10inch JLW6V2 JL 1000/1 at 2.68ohms sealed box no standing waves either lol...the whole trunk including the lid is dynamatted once and it is solid I dont have any shaking I even put dynamat on the license plate lol.....i dont think the stock system is pushing 111dB thats really far fetched....if you put the real judging equipment in there you would get like 6dB lol (im exaggerating but you get what Im saying) and im not on the stock headunit I have a pioneer Avic Z1 with a Z3 upgraded and extended partition harddrive.

Wish I could hear this... I would have bought your plans if you were willing to sell the design. Instead I went for a fiberglass enclosure.

I do in fact call bullshit on you my friend...you're all talk...i've yet to see you actully post some factual information that would in anyway make me believe that you have any clue as to what's goin on...no pics of anything...and everything you've ever posted has been completely based on bias opinion...

-Jason
FYI...SPL...is never measured at the Headrest...front right dash my friend...

post something to back this claim up...or somebody who has seen your system in faction first hand...

CSW...its nice to see someone up with with something other than a pre-fab JL box . Do you have a build thread for your 4th order? What size chambers and tuning does it have?

Not too sure since it wasn't mine. i'm sure i could've got louder if i played around with tones and found the peak frequency but i got lazy and scrapped the setup. i don't know why cswbiggs still tries to belittle me in every audio topic i post in.

who are you to say that i don't though? didn't you hit a 144 with 2 w6's? you're making it seem like me hitting a a 141 with a pure spl sub is impossible. i may know less than you about car audio, but i know enough.

How do you measure spl? I want to do this on my system.

Also, how do I determine what frequency my enclosure is "tuned" to? I have no idea what this means or how to determine this. My enclosure is not square or easy to measure volume, since it's fiberglass.

Thanks for any help...

I hit 139 db in my old Ford Escort GT about 10 years ago with 2 12" JL W6 in a sealed enclosure and a Orion 225HCCA amp pushing them. Not too bad because I really had no idea what I was doing.

trew spl is measured with equipment like a spectrum analyzer as an example...to measure box volume u can use packing peanuts or use software connected to ur speakers to determine where ur Frequencies are at along with all your other specs. q of a sealed box should stay around .7 for ideal config. and vented around .4 or vice versa...i dont remember off the top of my head i have it written down at home in my books....im leaving for FL this friday....ill bring some of my stuff ill show u how to test everything.
