Speaker Size Confusion
Speaker Size Confusion
Ive read in quite a few threads that the speakers are 6.5 all around with an 8" free air sub in the rear deck. I went onto crutchfield to purchase all new speakers and their car fit guide recommended 5 1/4" speakers all around with an 8" free air sub. Just dont want to buy the wrong size and have to deal with exchanging them. Any help would be much appreciated.
I'd like to clarify this also!! I just picked my TL up and I've got a thread about a system but I should make sure that the doors are 6.5" first haha. What speakers are you looking at Mce22Usa45?? Hopefully components....
I'm pretty positive the doors are 6.5"...not sure about the rear deck though. The sub is 8"

+1! I'm sure you're spending quite a bit of $$ since its all JL stuff but you can do much better if you wanted. I suggest getting a good 10" b/c that free-air 8" won't be able to get decently loud and low like a good sub.
So...why all JL?
I seriously doubt that anything was changed between 04 and 05 with the speaker sizes so i will go with 6.5" speakers. I already have 2 10 w3's in a ported enclosure so low end bass is not an issue. I listen to a variety of music and rarely use my subs. I am looking for everyday good listening, which for me is small low end, great mid bass and highs. All JL cause over the years I have always had the best bang for the buck with them. Their products have consistently performed well for me. If anyone else has any other recs im open to them. I have used botson acoustic, eclipse, infinity, and power acoustik over the years

Just a heads up; the door cutouts are not circular, they are sort of horseshoe shaped and the stock drivers are slightly smaller than 6.5". The stock drivers sit in a protective cup that sets them about .5" off of the door.
There are some 6.5" drivers that fit and there are some that don't; it depends on the shape and depth of the basket. If you wish to avoid cutting the door sheet metal, I recommend that you search for speakers that others have successfully installed.
Good Luck

This shouldnt be so difficult haha. Can anyone recommend high end audio that definitely fits in an 04 Acura TL? I dont care the brand as long as the sound clarity and quality is there.

If this is the case then just pick up a speaker bracket thats 1/4" thick or so and you will screw your speaker into that. It will move your speaker out another 1/4" and should be enough to fit anything since I don't believe the factory speaker is right up against the grille on the door (not positive though...to lazy to go look
). For components....exactly what kind of music do you listen to? Do you have a problem listening to speakers that are harsh/bright? Also, what's your budget for the speakers?
Car audio is absolutely 'get what you pay for' scenarios, so if you're looking for everyday good listening try Rainbow, Dynaudio, or DLS...I'm partial to the Dyns as their tweets are disgustingly smooth and a well powered system will leave you wondering wether or not a sub is needed at all

DeathMetal- I'm guessing you've heard the Dynaudio components?? When you say they're smooth...do you mean warm/detailed or what? And where are you finding them where they aren't expensive as hell! I'm looking for a component that won't kill me on the highs but will still remain detailed. I can't stand peaky components that people think Louder=Better

How do they compare to Rainbow? I guess what I'm saying is which setups have you heard and what did you think

I was running a far more expensive setup with the dyns (MK-360, IIRC), so naturally it smashed the ranbows... I think I was running the Rainbow SL line at the time.
The tweets were warm, precise, and smooth all across the operable frequencies for my x-over settings.
If you've got the bank, I would really recommend going with Dyn. Mind you this was in my last car, NOT the TL. I have only upgraded all speakers, no system yet as I am focusing on other mods. I HAD some fucking awesome subs (2 x Alumapro Alcehmy DVC SQ w/w the 2500) until some dickface stole it.
My budget for AMP, 8" sub, and 6.5"s is 1500.00 - 2000.00. However i can do it in steps and for now just swap out the rear deck components and then in a month or two switch out the front doors and dash.
I listen to everything from opera to techno on a daily basis (whatever im in the mood for) so i need something that can deliver a crisp smooth detailed rich sound across a wide range of frequencies. Im not sure what is meant by bright. I just want a nice balance between the highs and the mids... dont want that sharp metallic sound you sometimes get with poor quality highs or not enough midrange
PS... i dont need a lot of low end. I like to feel the low range, but not be vibrated out of my car or hear that annoying metal/trunk rattling sound! like i said i have the two JL w3 10" subs i had in my grand cherokee but they are turned almost all the way down or off most of the time.
