SIR-PAN1 Sirius update

Well I went to Circuit City today and picked up the SIR-PAN1 unit in hopes that maybe since our headunit is manufactured by Panasonic that maybe just maybe there would be hope of making this unit work inplace of the factory XM tuner....

Well I pulled out the XM tuner and I have it sitting here in front of me and I dont think that I will be able to make the SIR-PAN1 work for a few reasons.....
1. It appears that the factory XM tuner is made by PIONEER! It has a honda label on it and at the bottom of the label it says PIONEER CORPORATION.

2. The OEM adapter does not match the PANASONIC bus adapter....which I figured it wouldnt....if anyone has the resources to find a pin diagram from either the OEM side or the SIRPAN1 side it might help.

I have 30 days to work on this.....I dont plan on opening the SIRPAN1 until I am ready so that I can return it with out any problems.

I will update this when I figure something out.......

Am very very interested in this option.

Could you post a picture of the Panasonic bus pins, Acura specific and the SIRPAN1. hopefully they comply with some standard that we can find out about.

keep us posted.

Here is another option I have been contemplating.....

Using PIE HON03/PC-PIOX to interface to a Pioneer Sirius tuner (check out SIRPNR1 and SIRPNR2) I think this maybe an option because it looks like that the SIRPNR units us the pioneer IP bus

Well they seem to be already since the Head unit is made by Panasonic and I have in my hand a pioneer XM tuner that came out of my 05 TL. I am determined to get Sirius in the car through the headunit...

I was poking around the web and there are a bunch of entries on http://www.siriusbackstage.com that says it's not possible to get an xm ready headunit to display info from a sirius tuner.

I'm still searching, but it doesn't look good.

This is also interesting -- http://www.siriusbackstage.com/2007/...-coming-today/

That's not correct.

I have to return the SIRPAN1 to circuit city and I think I am going to pick up the SIRPNR1 (which is the pioneer version) and order the blitzsafe XM adapter and take a chance on that route.

D&D,

Have you spoken to anyone at logjam? This is where I was reading that it's not possible to have our car's display the sirius info on our headunits (which is what I meant in my previous post).

Maybe something has changed between now and then (even though this was only Nov of last year).

Here is the latest forum entry:

The post on logjam seems to talk about converting a XM tuner to a Sirius tuner which is not what I am trying to do. I want to REPLACE the XM tuner with a sirius tuner with an adapter between the two. I does not seem that complicated to me.
I have done this on my 2003 Chevy avalanche. The head unit is XM ready. I placed a Soundgate adapter inline with the kenwood sirius tuner and it plugs right into the rear of the head unit. If I loose signal the headunit still tells me that I have an XM error. I have limited song title display but I really could care less about that, I just want the damn audio content. I refuse to believe that this is impossible it just needs some $$ and R&D thrown at it.

If I can get the PIE part and the SIRPNR2 and show that it can be easily connected we as a group might be able to convince PIE to develop the adapter further.

It looks to me like the PIE adapter has the proper 14 pin plug and that it will connect to the SIRPNR2 so I think that the only issue might be the programming inside of the PIE...Now all I need to do is order the PIE adapter and try it out.

D&D,

I am not trying to discourage you, I would really like you to get this working! I hated XM and was considering a Sirius switch by installing their headunit and using my Ipod interface.

Here is some other info. There is a guy who created and adapter for the antenna that you can buy from him or diy so you can use the factory installed antenna.

It also has entries about adapting a sirius tuner to our headunits.

D&D,

I guess I don't understand the convert vs replace terms. If you convert, you use the stock headunit to control the tuner (stock being our TL headunit). If you replace, then you still need the Sirius headunit to control the tuner. Do you agree with these statements?

The replace option is already being done by many and the interfacing to the headunit for volume control and amplification is simple.

Every post by the tech support at logjam implies this can't be done or has not been tried. If both units use the IP Bus, it should be safe to connect them but the firmware and physical plug may differ.

On a related note, someone has converted a Honda XM antenna for use with a Serius and made it work, but don't take my word on it.

I do not agree. When I say replace I want to do what I have already described...remove the XM tuner and install in its place a sirius tuner with an adapter inline between the Acura headunit and the siruis tuner.

When I say sirius tuner I am talking about the black box the decodes the signal..My main goal is to eliminate the external control interface (ie starmate, stilleto, sportster et al) and have the Acura headunit control the sirius box the same way it controls the OEM XM system.

In an effort to keep things simple I DONT plan on using the factory XM antenna for now. If I can get it all working I may use the factory XM antenna in the future.

David

I can't speak for the Acura set up but on my 06 Corvette I was able to take out the factory XM unit & replace it with the SIR GM1 (I think that is what its called) and it works perfectly. The display shows the sirius channels abd all the information as far as artist, song title & catagory (ROCK, POP, ETC)

So it can be done .... just to clarify when refer to the xm unit, I am referring to the actual xm box that is hidden within the car, not the faceplate or the head unit.

One other thing, my radio still shows 'XM' as the mode when I am in sirius mode which is really no big deal.

Also in the Corvette you are able to use the factory antenna hook up.

I know this isn't a corvette board but I just wanted you guys to know it can be done plus if I end up trading my Audi in for a tl I would definitely want to switch out the xm to sirius

Update:

I returned the SIRPAN1 and picked up the SIRPNR2 (pioneer model) and I ordered the PIE HON03-PIOX adapter from logjam today. I should have the adapter by Friday so hopefully friday night or saturday morning I can get back in the trunk and see if there is any hope of making this pipe dream work.

To back up AF330i I did the same thing in my Chevy Avalanche which was XM ready and it DOES display station/song/artist info.

I spoke to the Tech assist line at PIE today and while the guy said he doesnt think it would work he was not really sure that anyone had tried this exact combination before.

Well I have all the parts. The only issue is that the plug in the truck is a female and the end of the plug on the PIE HON03 is female. I need to either build a male-male adapter or open of the dash and connect the PIE HON03 to the back of the radio....my only issue is that I have no idea where to start on opening up the dash...anyone have a thread they can point me to on getting into the dash and behind the radio???

Well as I figured.....it did not work.

If PIE would spend some time on this it has the potential to work well.

The PIE HON03/PIOX plugs right into the back of the radio and then connects to the SIPPNR2 via the IP bus. The only factors are providing a 12V source and running the sirius antenna. I connected everything and used a temporary 12V power supply to power the SIRPNR2. Well the headunit recognizes that the PIE adapter is connected....when I pressed the CD button twice the headunit would display CD-C (which I assume is for the CD changer function of the HON03) but there would be no audio or any other funtionality. I could hear a change through the speakers when I removed power to the SIRPAN2 so it seems like PIE just needs to work on the internals of the SIRPAN2.

So overall this has been a $225 experiment....hopefully Circuir City and logjam will allow me to return both parts. Hopefully by this summer there will be a new development in this department.

nice effort though....all the best with the returns.

Isnt it ridiculous that a company as big as Honda would force consumers to stick on with xm and even more surprisingly no 3rd part has a clean Sirius solution.

Hopefully this changes in the future

I plan on calling PIE and trying to speak with an engineer and directing them to this forum and the survey I conducted on hear a while back. They are very very close to having a solution.
