Show me your Valentine 1 or hardwired radar
Show me your Valentine 1 or hardwired radar
Ive been thinking about getting a valentine for a long time but could never justify spending $400 dollars on one when that money could go elsewhere. Ive been looking at some youtube videos on the valentine 1 and these bmws and AMGS have some crazy hardwired setups. Some of them even have the up and down arrows hidden inside the odometer area. I have yet to see a hardwired valentine on a TL or any unique "stealth" setups so I am hoping you guys on azine have some radar setups. Post some pics of your setup if you have any.
here is a thread from 'car talk'...not exactly what you're talking about, but there is some good info in there. figured you could PM any of the members in that thread if you wanted some more help too.

lol, i was thinking last night as i was driving back from work...
i don't really want a radar detector, but if i can have a super stealth install i definitely wouldn't mind it...
i was feeling around my car for good stealthy install points...

good post idea.

Funny you should post this thread, I'll be picking a V1 with the separate display next week. I already thought of a super sweet custom hidden install. I'll post up pics of what I do when I finish it.
Not a V1 but def. better and I got it plus install for only about $100 more...Passport SR7 Plus Shifters (laser jammers). I have seen vendors for the M5 put the 9500ci in the mirror and it only shows when an alarm goes off..its pretty sweet!

The door still closes and you can see the little mute button behind the keys. You double click this to turn off the laser jammers when you are down to the speed limit:

And if the windows are down on the highway with the music blasting there is an indicator light that goes from green to red:

Yep then down behind the side curtain airbag cover to the fuse box. Was a pretty easy install, IMO. I moved the unit up a little bit high so that it's not visible from the outside but isn't completely covered by the tint strip. I do leave it in my car since it can't be seen.
I'm running a hardwired K40. In the cabin, there is a volume/on/off dial next to the VSA button and an LED on the top of the steering column. The LED goes on and the system chirps only if there is trouble ahead.
There is a sensor in each of the front lower grilles. It is extremely stealth. No one has ever noticed it and it can easily be turned on/off without reaching down or moving around.
It is several years old now and while it has saved me a few times, it needs to be replaced.
For anyone else considering a hard wired system, mount the sensors as high as possible. The lower grilles, while super sneaky, are too low. This is the major draw back of my installation.

I have an Escort Passport 9500i mounted (velcro) directly onto the dash. It fits perfectly, and is in my 'line of sight' when driving.
I also have it hardwired into fuse #24 (the rear window lock switch), so when there is trouble, I can easily/quickly switch it off.
I simply tucked the wire between the dash and the windshield and ran it to the drivers side corner, then down to the fuse box.

Radar laws tend to vary by state, but it's not illegal to have one. Most cops will probably crack a joke telling you to pay attention to it if they stop you.
ummmmmm.....dont know how old this thread is....but...in my opinion....this is the best route to go

In it, you'll see where I mounted my Bel Sti- I think the high location is a great place for stealthness, performance, and accessibility (no need for remote switch since the buttons are right near your rearview mirror). I have had the detector mounted in this spot 4 years and wouldn't change a thing.

I hardwired a 9500CI in my 3G TL, which I will be putting in my 4G TL now.
I originally put the screen and the buttons in the lower flip compartment but I hated looking down at the screen while driving. So I thought of the best place (closest to eye level) that could easily be modified and replace with a new part later and that was the clock. So I took it apart and cut all the plastic layers (except the smoked lens so you cant really notice it when the radar is off). I was off a little bit on aligning the clock, so I just put some 3M where needed.
Here is a picture of the radar:

Also found this, which looks like his screen is outside (in front of the clock).

I have mine hard-wired and I just tucked it along the headliner and then down the A-piilar straight down to the fuse box where I used an add-a-fuse to tap into one of the fuses. I used the included hard-wire kit and the flat RJ11 (phone cable)
I've seen other people tap into the rear view mirror or the dome light.
use the first two pins for power ground. blendmount
uses a V1 part to hold the detector to the blendmount. due to the way it rocks back and forth in the V1 part it wears down the plastic on the V1. They cost $10 to replace......i wear out one a year.
I bought my V1 in 1999. I sent it in once for a minor update....cost like $100. Then a few years ago I sent it in for a Major....they sent me a new detector...that cost me $200.
so thats $700 total for about 16 years of use.....not bad/

Radar detectors are illegal here, never got a ticket, and obviously didn't spent for a radar detector. Money saved: $700.
exactly.
