Shameful NAV performance on 07 TL-S
It's absurd that the Navigation system on a 2007 Acura with the 2011 Map DVD won't accept address inputs for streets available on a 2006 model Garmin 650, never mind the cumbersome process of trying to search for points of interest like a preferred brand of gas station along a route. Our Nav system is great at doing everything EXCEPT navigating. I think Chrysler has the right idea having Garmin design their infotainment/Nav units. The End.
I just bought the 2011 Update Disc last week hoping to improve the performance. It improved from "crap" to "used toilet paper", not exactly what I was hoping for when the update disc cost more than a new Garmin Nuvi.
It blows my mind how update discs can cost more than a whole new stand alone GPS unit that includes the same database and map data.
If my Acura nav didn't do so much other stuff I'd consider just gluing my Garmin over the factory Nav screen. I've compromised and just keep my Garmin in the center console and monkey around hooking the thing up if I ever actually have to go somewhere I'm not familiar with. It's still annoying having to answer the constant, "why to you have TWO nav systems?" questions and having it take up half my center console.

probably the way you spelled it. Happens on mine too. Does it have dashes in the name, etc. It is kinda frustrating, so I use the Sort by Distance to Travel feature on mine, then just scroll down til you find what you like.

I have stated this before (and many disagreed with me...) but the nav system sucks. I do like the fit & finish of the system but I have never had it give me correct directions, granted I'm new to the car so I have not used it too much... But I'm not too sure how much I'm actually going to use it because of how inaccurate it is. On time I wanted it to guide me to the dealership to pick up some coolant, it took me ~10mi out of the way an told me the dealership was in the middle of a field

Acura needs to get its act together on this one.
I think that sounds more like a calibration issue. I've usually had good luck with street addresses.
POI's are a waste. Many are mis-spelled or mis-catagorized or both. Not to mention the POI database is out-of-date. But then again, so is my disc.
Again I don't think I would ever pay the $1500-$3000 (new) price for a nav system... just my
Calibration issue??? is there a way to calibrate the nav unit (other than tweaking the rotation)??? Also I used the POI menu to find the Honda dealership... I just took its word that Acura knew the location of its/Honda's dealerships...

I would too. So if you were 10 miles off and the "address" was a field and you've "never had it give you correct directions", it sounds like it could be something more than just the POI database.
but still don't think it is worth the money new, even though I have navi to change the A/C controls I use the buttons, same with the radio...
Yup I would agree, but when I searched for the location of the dealership using the POI that is when it landed me 10mi off course (according to where I was at was correct, so I got to where the POI location was stored). So I figured well maybe that POI was entered in wrong, I pulled out my phone and looked up the address then tried to type it into the nav... the street was not even in the data base... again I have been very disappointed with the system, and I know others have STRONG opposite opinions but until I am convinced otherwise I'm think this system is a huge ripoff. And I think the only way that I am going to be convinced is when the system can actually give me correct directions.

no....
Garmin, Tomtom releases NEW units all the time. bigger and better.
the TLs system was introduced in 2004. probably even late 2003.
thats 7 years.
the garmin 3700 series was just released in 2011.
you cannot compare the two.
even our iphones/blackberries/android phones are better than the navi.

Yes I understand that Garmin releases new units all the time and I agree that we should not compare a new Garmin to a 7+ year system, but if you compare an old Garmin to our system I would bet the Garmin would win (in terms of maps). Also if you buy a $185 map upgrade (yes I know some just got it for $99) you would think the maps would be updated... and according to jpgayan it is still pretty crappy...
I'm not trying to start anything I just want to voice my opinion, maybe it is because I'm living in New England??? who knows it may work awesome in other places???

but i do agree, it does SUCK ass.
I would never buy the maps even at 99 dollars
Stand up and do something about it.
I'm in the process of getting a dvd player hooked up to it.
Ive bought the converter, and the audio unit...Looking for the DVD drive.
after I get this hooked up, might look into replacing the 7inch screen with a better 8inch screen for a carpc.
with the carpc, my nav will never be outdated.
Complaining about it wont make it better.

CarPC!!! That's what I'm talking about!!! I have been doing some research on this and would like to add a carpc to my TL. I have found a high res industrial screen (probably costs a fortune...) I have also been looking around at mp3car.com, and I have seen some Acuras with a car PC my only concern is how to keep the integrated functions of the car integrated, ie skip a song using the steering wheel controls? if you get this done let us know how it works out, I am definitely interested.
It works well for me in SoCal, and I'm still on the 2009 update disc. The only issues arise when there is a new road/location or a former location closes down. I once got directions to a Bank of America, but it had moved one block north and from one side of the street to the other.
There are quite a few Borders locations that will be on the Navi list which are no longer going to be around, too.

I wonder if you were sent to a closed, former Honda dealership location that time you ended up in a field? However, the Navi problems may be more due to data entry than the actual GUI. A number of spelling errors/typos were corrected on the 2009 disc compared to the 2005 DVD, for example.
I've also had luck with inputting unique business names (i.e. not chain stores) and getting a proper list of destinations.
Everything can be voice-activated except the letter/number input, so that's pretty nice, and the alternate routing functions are sometimes useful.
The voice control integration of the climate control and audio is underutilized in my TL, though.
