Replacing Front speakers in 2006 TL

Replacing Speakers in 2006 TL
Okay, so I have a Manual 2006 TL. My warranty is up, so I can't keep taking the car to the dealer to fix the rattles. In short, the stereo STINKS! And I am fed up with it. It's time to make some changes. Just so you know, I usually listen at about Volume 35, with Bass -1, Treble +6, Center +5 Sub 0.

I know alot of you will tell me to put an amp, etc., etc.

I want to start small. I want to replace JUST the fronts and get something that sounds louder, cleaner, and better WITHOUT an amp. I want LOUDER and CLEANER. I max out the head unit sometimes and I can barely hear it with windows open.

What speakers would you guys reccomend? Also, I will do the install myself, so what will I need for the install? Lastly, can I put coaxial speakers in there, and will the head unit send the full frequency range, or are the DOOR fronts just recieving the mids, while the tweets are getting the highs?

THANKS!!!

Let the money spending and mods begin...

You're not likely going to get any louder with the stock amp. The only speakers I know of that are a little louder are the 2-ohm Infinities and it's not much. I went the same route as you, starting out with a front set and the stock amp and just like everyone told me, I would be upgrading later and I did. Upgraded the fronts twice and added an amp.

Most of the good speakers are 4 ohm and you would be lucky to not lose volume by going with them. I know it's not what you want to hear but an amp is just as important as the speakers. I could never get mine to sound the way I wanted with the stock amp.

Well, humor me here for a second. Do you know the exact model of these Infinity's? Also, are they coax and do you just hook them straight up to the line from the head unit? Lastly, do you have any pics of your original install?

I had the 63.7s in the doors, 1021 tweeters in dash, and a Reference 3.5" in the center (can't remember the model#).

The 63.7 doors are 3-way but after running them for a year, I ended up unplugging the tweeters (on the door speakers) and running them as a regular midrange in the doors. It was just too much treble with the door and dash tweeters together. Don't waste the money on the 3-ways or even 2-ways unless you like lots of highs.

The Infinities are a true bolt in and the only ones I know of that don't require some sort of modification to the doors. Just use the supplied adaptor and screw them in. I believe most places sell an electrical adaptor that plugs into your factory speaker plugs so you don't have to cut your harness for the new speakers. If not, you can use two male end terminals to make your own adaptor.

Just a word of warning, the Infinities are bright. The tweeters are fatiguing on the ears. I went with the 1021 since they're a soft dome tweeter and they still hurt my ears. The Kappa tweeters are even worse. On the bright side, vocals are very clear. With a stock amp and moderate volume, they're not a bad choice but there's much better out there.

I don't have pictures of them installed, I actually have the entire setup for sale but the GF is trying to get me to install them in her Murano and as always I'm sure she will get her way.

So you just took the speakers and hooked them up straight to the head unit?

I am thinking about trying the 63.7's and leaving the stock tweeters and everything else in. The speakers are $85 bucks new. What do I have to lose?

I really want to take the door panels off to fix the rattles. They drive me nuts, so if the panel is off anyways, might as well bolt on some new speakers.

Also, do you know of any Boston Acoustics coaxials that might work instead?

Yep. I used the existing wires in the doors straight into the speakers.

I'm still a newb on car audio. There are many here much more knowledge than me. I'm not familiar with the Bostons. I know I'm extremely happy with the sound quality of my new ID CTX65CS. I did get to compare them directly to the Infinities since I only got one side installed the first day and the Infinities were definately louder so I don't recommend them on the stock amp.

For $85 and stock tweeters in the dash, you might be happy with the 63.7s.

How's the bass response out of the 63.7's in comparison to the STOCK speakers?!

Also, the Boston Acoustics S65's seem like they might work well in a TL. The only downfall is the 4 ohm impedence over the 2 ohm impedence. Do you have any insight on the effects of a 4 ohm speaker in comparison to the 2 ohm speakers?!

Thanks!

4 Ohm will not go as loud due to higher resistance. But if the speaker is good enough, you won't notice because of the great improvement in the sound quality.

I used Infinity 1011t's tweeters and a 3022 center speaker. This alone made a HUGE improvement in the system. Then I put in 2 pairs of reference 6022i's and a basslink.

The equipment ran about 380 and I'll pay a guy I know to do the basslink, so when all is done it should sound GOOD and cost about 500. Bang for the buck I felt this was a excellent solution. Obvoiusly it won't sound like 3k of gear, but I'd rather keep the other 2500.
