Hello all decided to replace the 13 year old navigation system with a new 9.7 iPad. I got a soundmanCA slider kit which magnetically holds it along with the lighting changer pin. Full system (wiring, amp rack, sub) Still In the works. Audio will be streamed Bluetooth to a audiocontrol dm-608. Here are some pics of some of the progress. I know theres a whole android radio you can buy, but imo this looks better with more to offer. Let me know what you guys think.

Props to you for doing this, Id be concerned about not being able to use the physical buttons and backup camera though as most aftermarket things will not be compatible with the iPad
All the climate control buttons work and are displayed in the upper Info screen above the center air vents. Requires a circuit board inside behind the nav screen with the connectors. And it all works fine. I lose the clock. The back up camera I was able to tap into the oem camera and wired it to function the same sending the image to a separate 7” monitor I have in the driver side sun visor just requires me to tilt it down to view. But it turns on when in reverse and off when in drive
Just did a google search and wow that kit is pretty penny ($280) and requires a lot of fab work, but hey sure beats the POS that is the stock system
yeah its kinda expensive for a piece of plastic and magnets but I figure if Im gonna do this might as well start with a quality piece. I got it on Black Friday with a nice discount I just lagged on starting it. It does require fab work and some DIY skill but thats the fun in it for me. 13 years ago the oem system was awesome now its way outdated. With this I get Siri hands free phone calls text and messages, all my music up to date maps, anything really.
I take it you tether to your phone while it's in the car?
Its a WiFi/cellular model iPad I was thinking of tethering but I heard its lags and is annoying to connect.. I havent connected it to my cellular plan yet; Ill see how it goes and if I find it too annoying Ill bite the bullet and just add it and go cellular.
Mods, can any of you please move this thread over to the 3G TL Audio, Bluetooth & Navigation section? This will be a build thread and I want to get some input from some of the car audio people here. Thanks
whoa... i like how you filled in the gap where the volume and tuner knobs were. i always hated the look of that empty space when people replaced their radios. good job!

Thanks, Basically cut some thin fiberglass I had in the same half circles and epoxied from behind, then filled in front with body filler 7 Visor mounted monitor for backup camera. Powered up when in reverse and off when reverse is disengaged This is the 12v-6v step down converter I used to power the oem rear view camera. The connector for it is located behind the trunk liner rear passenger quarter panel. I just cut up an old video rca and tapped into the video, ground/shield wires to the visor monitor, took power from the reveres light wire to the step down converter and into the camera power wire.
Todays update: I took the power from the cigarette lighter plug thats in the center armrest cubby. I cut and hardwired a fused dual usb plug. One port will charge the iPad the other for a phone or other usb charged accessory.
I also ran a small on and off toggle switch to it. In case the iPad is already charged or I dont want or need to charge it. I can simply just turn the power off.
as for the cigarette oem cigarette lighter plug itself I popped it off cut it in half. That left a hole the perfect size for this USB port with short cable. It fit perfectly the I hot glued that and the switch in place. The little cover still snaps shut on it, although Ill probably always have a usb lighting cable in it.
Nice work! I recently started an iPad mini project and I was trying to think of ways to retain the OEM backup camera as well. Definitely looking forward to how this all turns out!
Been lazy these past couple of weeks. but I managed to finish the bezel, epoxied in the lightning charging cable and fixed a few blemishes. Blacked out the clock in the upper info display, figured I didnt need it since the iPad has time plus I can no longer adjust it. Got in some new equipment Im going to install in the system.
I have to figure out a layout and how Im going to install it in the trunk here are a few pics
Had to buy a new center cupholder, The sliding door on my old one broke into pieces got this brand new from the dealer $124 ouch
Picked up an Apple airport express to stream the audio via Wi-Fi it has an optical output, I have to modify it and solder in a voltage step down converter for it to work off 12V. Ill hook it up to my audiocontrol dm-608 digital sound processor with an optical cable since that will give me the cleanest digital signal
The amps Ill be running jail audio HD. I also have a 10 inch JL audio W7 which I have to build a box for so I still have quite a bit of work to do so stay tuned!
Ran 1/0 AWG cable to the trunk, also did the Big 3 cable upgrade using 1/0 AWG cable as well. Mounted and installed a stinger 200 amp really/isolator since I will be adding a second battery in the trunk. Made my own cables using 1/0AWG copper ring terminals and this handy crimping tool. Optima yellow top with upgraded terminals
