Rear fill, SQL, and the MS8...
Rear fill, SQL, and the MS8...
I've been wondering about this lately. Say I install my current ID CTX65s in the rear of the car once I get the Dynaudios for the front. Say I want to really crank it and keep up with the 15s. Will the MS8 allow the rears to receive full power or are they limited to fill only? I don't like rear fill 90% of the time but it would be nice to have it for those days I want to crank it to keep from torturing the Dyns as much.
Go for it. The stock rear signal is full range pre amp - no idea what it is after. I use some polys on about 50W in my rear, took the tweets out and just use the midbass and have found that I seem to like rear fill a lot when under 3K or so.
That's an interesting idea especially since mine are comps. I could just leave the tweeter out. Supposedly the IDs run the mid full range anyway and they roll off naturally.
I've got to get the IDs installed soon, the GF is trying to claim them for her car.

You will likely need to cross them or you will muddy up the 100-3K ish range with the highs. I used to hate rear fill (almost to the point of having none), but have come to the conclusion recently that I don't like rear screaming at me but is otherwise cool. It can also bolster the midbass experience of the fronts when appropriately crossed and powered.
The cool thing is that you have plenty of options with good quality comps and a processor.

The ms8 does not exactly create rear fill, in that you have the same material coming out of the rears, as you do the front, the ms8 pushes all out of phase material to the rears, to enhance the sound. In fact, if you were to disconnect your center and fronts with the ms8 and only listen to the rears, it would sound like they are cutting out because there is not a constant flow of music. its hard to explain... With the ms8, you can only use the fader to enhance the rears, unless you amp them and turn up the gain after the auto tune, which, I do not recommend because it will mess everything up.
The rears are really only used to enhance the sound, I have mine amped, but really, I should be running them off the ms8 internal amp and amping my center instead. The center and mids are really what make the ms8 sound right. IMO.
