Question about DVD-a's

i have been meaning to check up on this for a while, and i was wondering about the dvd-a's. i have seen some other threads, but they dont ask these questions and i dont want to steel other peoples threads.

1. how many minutes of songs can you hold on a dvd-a? (ie the sony cd-r's i use hold 80 minutes of songs)
2. just making sure, but you can play dvd-a's on non-nav's right? (im almost positive you can, i mean you are given a dvd-a with the car to test the surround sound)
3. i have heard its a pain to create dvd-a's because of the programs you must use, is this true? what programs do you use?
4. are there any other differences between cd-r and dvd-a's besides the quality and possibly length?
5. is it worth buying a dvd-rw drive just to play dvd-a's?

thank you for your time

The following answers are based on what I remember from posts in other threads.. hopefully my memory is correct , but please correct me if I'm wrong.

1. The standard the TL supports is 99 tracks with 1 group.
2. Yes
3. I currently use ulead movie factory 4 disc creator. Simple drag and drop and it does the rest. Other highly rated programs are adobeman's scripts and dvd-audio solo, which require an additional mp3 to wav conversion step.
4. Currently, the DVD-Audio that most people burn are just 2 channel, so its basically just a music disc that contains a lot of songs. There are members that have been able to convert DTS and DVD-Video audio into DVD-Audio which provide 5.1 surround sound.
5. Sure why not, you can use DVD-RW to watch movies on your computer, hack your navigation (which u dont have.. sorry), back up data on your computer. The price on DVD-RW are very affordable anyway.

Hope this helps!

  1. It really depends on the sample rate of the music. If you are talking about standard 2 channel CD quality music then figure on a max of 6 hours or so
  2. Play 'em in my non-nav all the time
  3. Depends. My scripts work good for 2 channel rips from CDs. I also like Cirlinca DVD Audio Solo. Cheap and works good. I will be adding mp3 conversion support to my scripts soon if that is of any interest to any of you. It won't be completely seamless but will just be one extra step to do a batch mp3->wav conversion.
  4. They are completely different animals. Require different players (although some player play both), and have different media and file formatting.
  5. Getting a DVD+/-R ,+/-RW drive will let you make DVD-A but not necessarily play them. For that you need the right software. I think WinDVD6 play them. Also, the TL seems to work best for people with DVD-R media.

1. With Adobeman's scripts for 2 channel DVD-A discs, I usually have between 84-97 songs on a single DVD -R disc (4.7 gb). My experience with CD-R media is about 16-19 songs.
2. Yes
3. Use Adobeman's scripts for creating DVD-A Discs located here along with all the neccessary info. Best of all, it's FREE!
4. IMO, it sounds a tad bit better, Again this will depend on your source.
5. Just for DVD-A reproduction, No! Considering how inexpensive it is, why not? Most folks who have a DVD burner use it for other purposes.

Just let me add couple of things -
1) Use a quality media preferably DVD -R discs
2) You're gonna make a couple of coasters first time out
3) I use DeepBurner (freeware ver) to burn the ISO image (or the app of your choice)
4) The most inexpensive way to create DVD-A discs.

i know .wav is better quality than .mp3, and is it easy to convert mp3 to .wav with your program (you say its just an extra step so i am assuming its easy).

i am guessing it is very hard to convert DTS and DVD-Video audio into DVD-Audio, would you happen to know which program you would need for that? and how difficult it would be to create DVD-Audio with that special program? would this DVD-Audio affect the capacity of the disc?

Actuary has created a thread for this. I searched the forum and found this: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129253

From what I've read, 5.1 DVD-Audio requires 6 wav files per track/song. Actuary's thread should give you more insight.
