Project iPod Dock
Project iPod Dock
Well I guess i am not happy with the possible solutions for the Ipod mounting locations. Here is the boat i am in. I have the Dice Ipod Adapter and Pac nav to video adapter. So i have two Ipod hook ups. One of them I will need to manipulate while it is connected (not sure how i am going to do this yet) and the second one that is controlled threw the radio it self(project Ipod Dock).
I went ahead and bought an extra OEM radio for my Car (04 TL w/ Nav) to build the dock in so i am not with out tunes(have no idea how long this will take). So the Idea is to build a 100% stealth dock in the tape slot of the OEM radio. Concept Build a dock in side the OEM Radio. Addition idea that was though of was to maintain the use of the eject button to eject the ipod from the radio. Re screen print the tape flap to read "Ipod Dock" or some thing like that. Maybe leave it the way it is.
I haven't yet received my extra radio however i should get it this week and plan on starting the project next week Monday. I have a wine bottling party that i am attending this weekend. Other wise i would be all over this project.
Here is what my stereo consists of
OEM Head Unit
Dice Ipod Integration
Pad Video Integration
Back Up Cam
OEM amp Removal
Cache LOC8
JL 600/6
xs 6.5 comps (front)
ctx 6" coax (rear)
JL W3 10" (rear deck)
100% Sealth install
10%ish Trunk space loss
I am starting a picture blog shortly for my project past and present and will have a full picture and step by step of my endeavor in this project.
Please any feed back would be nice. My stereo is they way i like it and do not plan on changing components. This will be a trial and Error Project(another reason i got a spare radio), although i am open to ideas I have a plan already and will be trying that out first.
Planed Cost:
Ipod adapter (already own)
Extra Radio (150 ebay not necessary but a precautionary measure)
Parts (50-100ish)
LOTS of TIME
Pic will be posted as the project progresses none to post right now

subscribed for future pics. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
Just a thought , but if you "screen print the tape flap to read "Ipod Dock" or some thing like that", it wouldn't be 100% stealth.

You wanna modify the radio in a way that you would put the ipod into the tape slot and it would connect to the ipod connection and the little flap door would close. So no one will be able to see the ipod. And then you can press the eject button and the ipod would pop out? Did I get that right?
That would be pretty crazy if it works. Good luck man, it seems like you will need it

You are correct. It wouldn't be but it was a thought and if i could make it look like it was there from the factory then i would do it.

did you just make a new user name haha Like I said that would be pretty bad ass man. A lot of custom work to be done tho I am guessing but it might work. I have also never seen a tape in there so don't know if it goes in all the way or not. What kind of ipod are you gonna be using on there? ipod touch is not that much longer than the tape. And I think they are about the same width.
sounds like a ton of work. i dont know about the whole motorized dropping in and eject thing. that may be impossible. ass it is all the mechanisms in there are compact. and adding a dock/plug would interfere with it, so that would never work. even if you got the ipod in there flush. whats gonna eject it? i think the tapes are spring loaded in there. for a small spring and light weight unconnected cassette tape would be no problem. but a heavier ipod attached to a plug? even if the ipod is lighter its connected via a plug. which takes effort to unplug.
i made a custom iphone dock in the cupholder area which plays videos and all my music. the audio part can be controlled through the oem head deck and steering wheel buttons. when i close the sliding door over the dock, its completely stealth. you would never now its there.

JPTL although i haven't posed much i have seen your work and it is very clean and impressive. I do require my cup holders ( this my daily and I have two kids) . I have Located a tape and will see how the mechanicals work later tonight. I have ways around the plug moving up and down in side the unit given there is enough room, and that is the big question for me untill i get my prototyping radio here. I am very good with machanical items so making or adpting the cassette tray should be easy. I should know more tonight when the radio arrives, the tear down will begin... I will post Pictures of every step for those who would like to try this in the future.
Well I thought that i could edit my posts but I cant figure it out....Any way got some pictures up More photos here http://cars.nufotos.net/?p=7 but here are a few good ones.
The Parts that I might use. Ipod Touch and an Iphone 3gs and pro clip mount.

Ipod Semi Inserted showing spacing

Ipod in cassette tray

Ipod Fully inserted

Ipod "Ejected"

This should get some people thinking unfortunately i am not going to have much time to work on it until next week but we will see what happens, i might find some time.....

Just seeing it in there like that makes it easier to imagine the outcome. Should be interesting and definitely unique.
Yea, I was going to tell you that when I saw your future use posts, you can only edit for 5 minutes after the post, so those won't work.

you cal always ask the admin to move the pictures up there so it has a nice flow to the thread. And people don't have to go through how ever many pages looking for pictures
Yes that is the plan. I have a pro CLip that i can mount in there and have the ipod stick out some and i would be done already. but that would be easy and i don't like easy. the next idea is that when the ipod gets inserted the tape player would kick in and i can't have that so i have to figure out how to inguage the "XM" input automagaicly. Hum... to many sub projects i sould start the led converstion while i am in there too

Ok back in town, Got my ideas set and going to try and make this happen by and of this weekend. Got some supplies coming and there isn't going to be much going on until they arrive. Trying to sorce on last micro switch to trigger the xm channel when inserting the Ipod. Should Be Fun.
OK so here is the plan. Waiting for some abs plastic to come in to attach to close up the gap on the cassette tray. It is pretty straight forward. I am looking to find a switch to tie into the face plate to trigger the XM button to automatically start the playing of the IPod instead of the Tape. I also have to fab the plug and it's mount. Just for those who want to try it out.
I'm interested to see how this turns-out...
I'm currently running music from my iPhone 4, using the Acura Music Link. I have the cable running into my center console, but your post has got me thinking... perhaps I could integrate the cable into the factory stereo, and build a loading mechanism for the iPhone to slip into the cassette slot.
I mean, honestly... a cassette?

Well My first attempt for a motorized system has failed....My fist idea didn't work with the preprogrammed system for accepting and ejecting a tape. So what i might do is finish up this part and then install it in the car and the try again with the unit in my car now...... So what I did tonight was build and fit a try to hold the Ipod straight while being inserted to the try for plugging in...... So i dismantled the Cassette tray and then fitted a molded abs tray to hold the Ipod snug in the tray. you will see there are photos of me trying to rework the motorized system to only suck the ipod straight in with out dropping. I was looking at the system when it was dropping and the tray would twist in the track and i think it may have bound up and not operated smoothly..... Next step find a catch so that it will operate like a pen or a glass door on an entertainment system so that it wont stick out, Looking to add a switch to trip the xm button so that the unit will start playing when it is pushed in..... I am disappointed for now...... I am going to try again with the one in my car so it isn't over yet..... PS for those who would like to use the slot for a dock you can buy, modify, and mount a proclip inside the radio to the platform the cassette workings are mounted to... it would be pretty easy...

Why do you need to try again with your other HU? Did implementing your first idea make that HU unable for any more alterations? Just thinking that you don't want to go beyond the point of ruining your other one. That might kill this mod.
I modified some of the gears to stop the travel so those are unusable but i will have another unit to try with that should come out of my car... So there will be a round 2 but I spend about 2 hours in my car driving to and from work so not having a radio for longer than a day is out of the question...... Parts are on order to finish V.1 of Tape to Ipod. Updates will follow
^tell me about it ... i'm stuck in LA traffic every day for a 80 mile, round-trip commute ... AND i leave my house 5:30AM.
Very interesting project ... will definitely be chiming in here from time to time. However, I do prefer to be able to see my ipod screen from time to time even if most of the controls are viewable via the oem system ... obviously not an issue for you. good luck with the install and update us of your progress once the items come in.

It is an issues i have two connections one fore audio and the other that does video as well..... so i will have one that i will be able to see thinking of molding the second one in some where that the screen can be manipulated easily if i would like to see it.....
I had my two young daughters recently and have been get a few parts here and there. I will resume working next week the goat to be complete and installed by next weekend. I did order an additional Cable to mount inside the radio so it can be 100% ready to install then just plug it in to the Dice Silver line control box. I found some touch latches but i will have to fab up a mount for them to work shouldn't take long to do once i can get to the shop.... I haven't forgotten my dresser is covered in parts for this and i am tired of going deep into the center console to get the ipod i use to work out with every day.....
Ok Every one, last of my parts should arrive today and i am trying to finish this project this weekend or at least the non motorized version of it. Stay tuned for more pics and info and possibly a vid of the finished product.
Finished V1

Well, V1 is complete. The only ill effect was sometimes when i turn the car on I receive a "Tape Err" ....hum I am totally alright with that. Pretty Straight Forward here i welded the cassette tray to correct width so that the Ipod would dock nicely with the din connector. Next make the touch latch at the rear it worked out nicely. I thought I was all Done but i had some clearance issues that need to be corrected. I found room and it is in. One Change I would make is to have it catch not quite so far in so that it would be easier to grab and slide out. Going to test this one out for a while to see if it holds up (I am sure it will) and to see if there are any changes that i want to make on V2. Remember this would be not for your faint at heart DIYer. Good luck for those who want to try. I will help you any way i can.....

That's bad ass. What button activates the ipod, you pushed xm and tape/disc?
How is the sound quality compared to the radio, xm, cd, etc?
As far as names, I like "custom acura ipod dock", like your youtube vid. You could even add "tape dock"

I have the Dice Silver Line Ipod adapter. the "XM" Button makes the ipod play. It seems that CDs / radio are slightly louder than the Ipod Adapter than i have. The Sound Quality is only as good as the recording or the mp3 file that you have. I can't perceive any quality difference between cd and that same song on an ipod. This DIY is going to be Long and Rather detailed.... You could use any Ipod adapter out there to do this mod

Thats would be so sick!
