Optimal Sub Placement?

So I've been searching for awhile now, but most of what I'm finding is about 2nd Gens for some reason.

I'll be installing a 10" Polk MM1040DVC in a sealed box with a Polk MOMO Carbon Series C500.1 powering it. I've been trying to figure out what people recommend for the box placement, either facing the front of the car (with the passthru open?) or the back of the trunk. For space purposes, I'd prefer to keep it against the back seat if possible.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Ideally, I'd love the custom enclosure on the driver's side, but can't afford it at the moment, so this is the best I got.

I have mine in ported box facing the back near the back seat. Works for me. I tried putting it by tje side but i felt there was too much vibrating going on (literally). Also you can get nice phone apps to test your frequency response and adjust sub level/crossover.

Facing the rear will get you a little more gain if that's what you want.

OK, so it sounds like facing the back will be fine. That's what I had figured was most common. I suppose then it will probably look like this:

3 more questions:
- Is it best to keep the pass-thru closed if the sub is facing the back?
- Any tips on securing the box and still using the all-season mat in the trunk?
- Does it matter if the sub is in the middle or off to either side?

Thanks for the help!

1. I find that there is a slight increase in SPL with the pass through open, but it is negligable
2. Mine is not secured to anything and I have the all season mat as well but the enclosure is tall enough where it touches the top of the trunk when I push it back, which hold it in place well enough for me, I have never had it move much even if I have had to do some quick stops
3. Didn't make much of a difference to me but I have it to the left side just because I liked having all the usable space on one side of the enclosure rather than split it on either side

Thanks for the response. I'll probably leave it off to the left and keep the pass-thru closed I'm thinking. As far as keeping it in place, I was thinking of maybe putting down some velcro. That would probably be enough to keep it where I want it, since I don't anticipate it moving much anyway.

I agree, a hard stop could definitely shake it around. Any other thoughts on what could hold it in well?

You need to plan for the worst- a wreck. I would use L brackets.

It's going to sound different anywhere you put it. I suggest doing the velcro thing at first and try it in different positions. There's a huge difference from facing forward to backwards. Corner loading it may or may not get you more bass as well. For best sound, I personally like it when the trunk is not in the equation. My old bandpass had the port firing between the seats and my IB setup has the subs coupled with the cabin.

Do you know where you can get the velcro, either at a store or online?

I had some strong stuff and it will make your carpet look worn out or maybe a shag carpet if you need to move it very much. my idea was to attach bungies but it got cold out so msybe in the summer. I just left my ported 1.25 ft3 box unsecured for now but it hardly moves because i have the cargo net dividing the front from back.

So I've decided to have the install done professionally by a local shop that a good friend of my cousin owns, so I'm getting a good price and I know they will do great work. I figure they will be able to get it tuned up nicer than I could as well.

As a result, I'm thinking of having them remove the factory sub while they are in there. I guess, is it optimal to remove the factory sub if you can?

Bump. So does anyone have an opinion on leaving the factory sub in or pulling it out? I'm assuming it's best to remove, but just looking for opinions. It's being done Thursday afternoon, can't wait!

Put the sub in the corner and AT LEAST use the cargo net to hold it back. You can get some corner gain if you point it like the corner boxes do to the other side and slightly forward - it will be a bit louder.

I took my factory subs out of both cars, but it is a sizable job... you have to remove the rear seat, C pillars and the rear deck.

Thanks. I will definitely be securing it somehow. I'll probably talk to my installer to see what he recommends or has used in the past.

The cargo net seems like it couldn't hurt either. I actually just discovered that I have one when I lifted up the lid to the spare tire. The nets were in there, along with an extra set of acura wheel locks.

And my install got moved to Monday, I couldn't make it on Thursday anymroe. The guy was thinking it would be roughly a 2 to 3 hour job, which is why I think he might be planning on removing the rear seat already. Assuming he is, I will have him pull the sub.
