Thumbs up Non-navi to navi conversion with custom system finally completed 3G Garage #I-142

Well after a year of regreting not getting navigation and not being able to find Trashcan , I was finally able to assemble all the pieces and find someone to install it. While talking to the installer we decided to add a small system while doing the conversion. This is what we did:

Factory navi conversion
Avelectronic switcher
Audiovox 10 disc changer
DA 6" component set-front door and dash
DA 6" coaxial set-rear doors
DA 5" component set- 1/2 used for center channel in dash
DA 10" D3 subs-2 used in trunk
DA D6 amp- 2 used in trunk
Audio Control LC6

I had this done by MB1 Motoring in Atlanta. 404-815-4621
The installer names were Matt and Sean.
Matt did the navigation and Sean did the system.
Installation for those interested is $500. You have to supply all the parts.
To let you know, YES all factory commands work!

Thanks for all the comments.

I paid about $1700 for the parts. I sourced them through www.car-part.com and www.acura247parts.com.

What solar sensor?

There's supposed to be a sensor that detects where the sun is. The info is sent to the climate control to compensate for the increased/decreased heat.

Hmmmmmmmmmm. I didn't order those sensors. The installer had to order a few things, so I'll ask him on Monday. Also I'll check today when I'm driving to see if climate control and the sensors are working.

if you look at this pic of his

you can see it's already there, the TL without Navi has the same climate control as the TL with Navi, so that part is already there

The TLs w/navi have 3D solar sensing. It uses the GPS to deduce your position and angle wrt sun and accordingly complensates for any extra heat. Here's the description.

It's in my 04. You can tell it's working when making lots of turns and hearing/feeling the vents changing. There aren't separate sensors for this as it's part of the navigation system. You can view the "Solar Angle" in the navi diagnostics where it shows the sun's instantaneous position relative to the car.

I have the sensor

But I will have to ask if it was incorporated with the navigation.

Yup, it's been a standard feature on the 3G TLs w/Nav. Here's an 04 review that mentions it (just search for '3D' on the page). The reason I think this feature only works with the nav model is, if you enter the Maintenance menu on the nav, one of the sub menus actually displays the solar angle in realtime, moreover the calculation does require your current position and direction, which requires the GPS. It is possible that the sensor is installed on both models, but in the non-nav model, it just isn't used.

The 3D solar sensing was one of the odd features that came with the navigations system. May be not so odd if it needs the navi's GPS to calculate where the sun is and at what angle in reference to the car. The other odd feature is the Michelin tires. Possibly just a perk to the navi buyers.

I would also like to see the part number list you used.

Did you have to swap out the climate control display that is above the hazard light switch ?

Is there a way to play DVD movies on a TL with Navi? Splicing in an aux output of some sort?

Update with part numbers

Sorry it took me so long to update, I have just been swamped.

The part numbers I used were

1.39540-SEP-A41-Navigation unit
2.39835-SEP-A41-GPS Antenna
3.39541-SEP-A40-Navi Bracket
4.39051-SEP-A41ZA -Navigation display
5.35890-SEP-A11- Switch Ass. HFL and Navi guide
6.84651-SEP-A01ZA -Trunk carpet
7.39710-SEP-A41-Clock display

I also bought a whole bunch of clips and screws. I didnt use all of them and I cant find thier part numbers, if I do I will update. I did not get a harness with the parts that I bought. The installer used 32751-SEP-A00. It is a door harness. He said that it had the two connectors that I needed. The harness that actually goes there is 32117-SEP-A30. It costs alot. As far as making the door harness work, you will have to talk to the installer. As far as time down on this project, he said to expect 2 days. Mine took longer because of trouble shooting and the system.

I will find out about the solar sensors in the next few days. If that is the only thing I have lost by doing this conversion, I am ok with it. I am just glad I have a new toy.

By the way, I have the carpet for the trunk if anyone is interested. Pm me.

dan,

That install is absolutely amazing!

What are you using to play DVDs on your Navi screen? Just curious...

Also, you had to sacrifice your spare to get those amps in there right? I love it though, looks amazing, I think I'll copy you.

How much did the amps cost you? What did the speakers cost you? What were the exact models of the speakers?

I'm really impressed with that install, so clean. Nice job!

dan,

What do you use to control the 10-disc changer?

What made you choose the LC6 over the Matrix?

I am using Avelectronic switcher. I chose it because they are located about 20 mins from and I did not want to have to cut in the dash for switches.

Yes I had to sacrifice my spare but I didn't care. I just wanted as much trunk space as possible. That is why I chose the subs that I did.

As far as the cost on the amps and speakers, I did pay too much. But, If I ever have any problems I can just take to them and give them the keys and they'll fix it.
The model #'s are S600S for the 6" components, D3611 for the 6" coaxial, 1/2 of S500S for the for the center channel and DS310D4 for the two 10" subs.

Thanks for the comments. I was trying keep it clean. Immitation is the greatest form of flattery!

I have a remote for the changer. The eye is located under the dash on the right side of the steering wheel.

The installer recommended the LC6. I asked about the matrix and he said I did not need it. I can control everything through factory controls.

The only thing that I dont like is that I have no bass while listening to XM or while watching DVDs. I have an appointment tomorrow to remedy this situation. I'll keep you posted. BTW, do you think the matrix would have been a better choice?

Dan,

DeathToToasters a user on the site said the matrix was better because it had better line converters or something. So basically they took the output from the head unit, passed it through the LC6 and then straight to the amps? And the signal is SUPER clean? You don't hear any noise? I'm going to be doing this kinda thing soon, and I want to make sure it's super clean without any noise or distortion.

Dan,

Did you actually put the 6" Coax D361s in the rear doors? You wrote rear doors up there. Just curious. The speaker model you mentioned don't look too expensive on eBay:

D361i = $89.00
S600S = $279.00
S500S = $259.00 (for the pair)
D310D4 = $79.00 each

I'm guessing you have two 4-channel amps... The D6-600.4? They're $360 each on eBay.

That sound about right?

Yes they are in the rear doors. I looked on ebay while my car was in the shop at those prices too. I paid more than that but if I have a problem, they fix it not me. I got a real good deal on the labor for the total project so thats were I came out on top. Yes I do have 2 D6600.4

How come they put the speakers in the doors instead of on the rear shelf? Did they do a nice job on installing them in the doors? Do you have pics of the doors and the rear shelf?

My bad. They put them in the rear shelf, not the doors. I'll post pics of the rear shelf later on today. Looks like stock.

OK cool :P

Thought it was weird. hehe.

Well, your setup is pretty much what I'd like -- minus the subs. I just can't afford to sacrifice all that trunk space. I think I'll do the 10" on top fo the Navi unit box idea...

But your install is really nice. So the DVD changer has a built in DVD decoder? It outputs video and audio? That's pretty awesome.

Dan,

Nice work. The extras you added makes it more interesting than the factory version. Did you have to provide all the wiring diagrams or did the installers figure it out. I have all the parts and the shop manuals. I just need to find a good installer (any one know of one in the San Francisco south bay area?) and the wiring diagram/harness. By the way which door harness did you use?

Does the clock display hook up with the same harness as whats on there now, or did you have to use another one?

Congrats on a beautiful job! I opted not to get the Navi with my TL but it's great to know that a good job can be done down the road if I decide to go Navi! What do you think it would cost just to do Navi only conversion or a Navi with DVD player capability conversion?

Thanks. I paid about $1700 for the navi parts. I cant say what I paid for the labor, but the shop now charges $500 for the install. If you want the dvd player and the avelectronic video switcher, you would add about another $1000 installed.

All cars with climate control have sun sensor, which distinguishes between sunny/cloudy/night and adjusts heat or cold accordingly. TL with Navi uses GPS to additionaly adjust HVAC output based on Sun position relative to the car.

I looked on the diagnostics screen under solar angle and it seemed to be working. I will take a pic of it when I get a chance. Can someone with factory navi take a pic of theirs and we can compare?

Dan,

Awesome, you give me hope. I got a great deal on a non-Navi system but i have been regreting it ever sence. The dealers at Columbus GA where I got the car told me that it would be impossible to put a navigation in.

Thanks for the great write-up. I will be calling those installers soon.

one ?, why is ur subs/box mounted on the rear deck upside down? from the pics, it looks like you cant put much into the trunk since the opening is limited now?
