New Version of NAV DVD

I have an 04 TL and then original NAV DVD. I was thinking of ordering version 3.60. Does anyone know if another newer version will be coming out soon?

If a newer version was coming out this year, it would probably be out by now.

No, they only have annual updates, so the next version that is coming out will be Fall of 2007.

Ditto

I am also wanting to upgrade the DVD navigation disk on my 2004 TL.

The website is not clear. It says that 3.60 is available but that 2007 will be out soon. They don't say if they are talking about model year or calendar year.

The linked page showing the historical upgrades seems to indicate that 3.60 is it until fall of 2007- in which case I will probably shell out the nearly $200.

They make it clear, however, that we won't be getting the upgraded navi- just an updated data base with more cities and a few glitches fixed.

We still won't have the RL/TSX/2007 TL improved navi or real-time traffic.

I wonder if it will include any additional voice commands? They are not clear about that, either.

3.60 is the "new" version that just came out. I ordered mine last week. Should have it tomorrow. Only map updates for this release, no new voice commands or any other features.

There won't ever be the RL/TSX/2007 TL improved navi or real-time traffic in an 04-06 TL, unless you go through the rediculous expense of swapping out all the hardware. Our system is older hardware and doesn't do those functions, and it never will.

So I got my 3.60 disc yesterday, but haven't popped it in yet. Anyone tried it yet? Our area has had recent development so I'm going to see if I can find any obvious additions to the data set.

We have a computer on board with i/o device of a DVD and a memory card slot. The software program can be upgraded. We can even flash the EPROM, can't we?

Are you saying that the new generation nav systems require a more advanced computer system?

Why?

While the presence of a flash card slot does mean that it CAN be upgraded (to what degree, no one knows) that doesn't mean that it WILL be upgraded.

I'm not sure if anyone here knows for certain that the 07 nav hardware is different than the 06, but it is likely in my opinion. For nav traffic, there has to be an interface between the XM tuner and the nav computer to transmit traffic data, receive it, and process it for display. It is reasonable to assume the 06 navi only has an audio connection for XM.

The nav CPU has to be able to process this additional data and recalculate routes to bypass traffic problems. Most likely the 06 navi can't do this. And there needs to be more RAM to hold this additional data. So on and so forth.

If all that was needed was a software upgrade, then Acura probably wouldn't have waited until 07 to upgrade the TL navi. They would have done it at the same time as the TSX and the Accord, which happened in 06.

Don't let the flash card slot fool you. It doesn't mean dick. They put those there "just in case", mainly if a problem arises that requires a software fix. Heck, every major video game console for the last 10 years came with an expansion slot, but hardly any of them were ever used.

The bottom line is that, no matter what upgrade capabilities our navi has, it won't see any major upgrades unless they come from hackers. Acura does not offer major new features for old nav systems. They only focus their energy on the next model update, as any smart car company would. They would make very little money selling upgrades for older cars, and would encourage new buyers to go used instead of getting the latest and greatest model.

Ha! Dream on. You've got what you got. If you want an update, you'll have to buy it at about $200.

There is little difference between 3.5 and 3.6. There were some new (small) cities added to the map data base and some new points of interest.

Get details here: https://iweb.alpine-usa.com/Acuradvdsales/naviorder.php

You can always try to strongarm the dealer out of a 3.6 but I'm not holding my breath.

I thought you had one year of "free" upgrades if they came out during that year. At least that is what I recalled specifically asking the salesperson and I was told "yes".

Go for it! Call in the chips. There's a new one out and there won't be another one until the Fall of 2007.

Good luck.

Generally they'll say anything you want to hear to sell you the car, but once it's sold, that's it. I would still ask if I were you, but as the others have said, good luck.

Your dealer is wrong. See the link in post #2. You can order it there (if its in stock) or try a different dealership.

There are no new features with the update; Just updated maps and POI. So it depends on location. Click on the link provided above and see if there are any changes that is worth it to you.

does version 3.6 make the navi smarter?

also I called my dealership and they told me you HAVE to order online for the new disc.

they don't stock them AT ALL.....

is that true? I can't order them at any dealerships here?

It makes it smarter from the point of view that it has more areas mapped and more Points of Interest...

However, it does not make it "think better". It still has the same Navi program with some additional data, some updates, and some bug fixes.

And that's not a bad thing. Acura's Navi is highly regarded as the best OEM available. It just gets understandably better with every upgrade of the Navi system as in the RL and TSX and new 2007 TL.

A previous poster opined that he thought a Navi system is distracting to the driver. My experience is just the opposite. I have drivers asking me questions about directions and routes when all they have to do is look at the Navi screen. IOW, they don't pay enough attention to it.

The 2007 TL Navi's are a different system (newer) that allows for real time traffic. It is similar to the RL, the TSX, RDX, MDX.

The disks are completely different. You have to get the color that yours came with. The older 3G's are orange.

The NAV DVDs are sold thru ALPINE Corp-who makes them, via the acura.com website

No dealer stocks them- its that simple

You can look up what city additions have been made before you buy. It makes sense for most of us to wait 2 years between unless you are a far and oft travelling person

I tend to agree but also wonder exactly how many peices ARE different and would have to be replaced? For instance if its just the NAV Computer and XM unit both located in the trunk, and there were no changes to the Screen up front (didnt notice any in my friend's Type S), then in theory it would be fairly easy (albeit not cheap) to swap out the Nav Computer, XM Tuner, and whatever cable is interconnecting them (that may not have even existed before) and whamo, upgraded NAVI.

Do we have any really curious owners out there who have access to both an 07 and an earlier model who would be willign to try this out?

Also, I wonder if the Service Manuals have been updated with newer part numbers for the 07. In theory if they did that already, you could just compare the Service Manuals for the 07 to an older model and anything that changed would have a different part number. I am of course referring to the huge grey service manuals the Service Bays buy, not any of the little glossy manuals that came with your car.

I checked, the Navi display, radio, XM Module, and Navi unit are all different for '07 and all have different connectors. I was going to upgrade my '06 but traded it instead for an '07 Type-S.

As of a month or so ago new hard copies of the service manual were not yet available, but you could access soft copies on the Honda Express Service Website.

Accessing that website is how I found that everything had changed for 2007.

Ok, i have a friend that has an 07 TL-s. I was wondering if it is even possible to use some of the info from the newest disc and run it alongside the navi hack stuff i have been reading. Im not 100% sure about anything like this, but i have access to the disc at any time, so if nothing else maybe i could use something.

If anyone knows, and is willing to point me in the right direction, i would appreciate it. Thanks

Mark

Oh man....

So I'm literally sitting in the waiting room at Acura of BR (getting oil change, tire rotation at 11,000 miles) right now on my laptop reading this forum. Acura is courteous enough to offer free wi-fi.

I asked the service salesperson (because they SELL service, not work on cars) and no one here knew anything about how the dvd updates work other than "I'm pretty sure Acura mails you something and gives you the option to buy"

Soooo.... thanks to you amazingly informed people, I was able to show this forum to the service sales people (as they all gathered around while I was showing the first) this forum. They wrote down the acuranavi.com as apparently no one knew about it.

BUT, they were all very friendly and openly admitted to not really staying on top of this specific topic. One didn't even know the 07's had the traffic feature

So that's my little anecdote for day.

Oh! Off topic, but the sales manager said he loved the sound of my exhaust! (for those wanting to do a resonator/mid muffler mod)

First: it's a DVD, not a CD... and that's a good thing.

If you have navi and it is working, it is inside your navigation unit on the right side of the trunk. If you lift up the front "door" on the unit and push the eject button, you will see your navi DVD.

If it's not there, and your navi doesn't work, you got certified !
