How much space do you wanna take up in the trunk? Do you want clarity in the bass, or just "raw" pounding...? Like is this for your personal listening enjoyment, or is this to have the loudest car on the block?

in between, lol i want base, but also clarity...something loud but not killing the car to where it sounds broken, and not to much space in the trunk, but enough

I'm the same... I want clarity first, but with plenty of pounding behind it... so I personally got two 10", 2 ohm, dual voice coil subs (Kicker CompVR to be exact), which I mated to an 800W amp. But I also have a 600W 4-channel amp powering my front and rear speakers (except the tweets and front center speaker). My amps are mounted to the back of the seats in the trunk, via a carpeted board cut to fit right in there. The one problem I need to fix is securing the sub box in the trunk... my driving, well, it moves things around in the trunk a lot

Now choosing the box is the fun part... and to each their own... size matters.

If you stick to craigslist or amazon.com you can get some really good deals... but if you go through craigslist, you may want to buy an amp afterwards to match your subs. And that would be your cheapest route overall... half the subs come in a box with an amp in a package deal... in Seattle I've seen a few that were under $100, most probably $100-200 (with an amp included), and for the nicer setups it can go as high as like $800... depends on what you are looking for, and how desperate they are. I already had an amp, so I had to be very selective on the subs I bought to match the amp... I needed 10", 2 ohm, dual voice coil subs... half the people on craigslist couldn't even tell me the specs on what they had.

I got my kicker's on amazon.com for about $110 shipped, but without the box. I plan on spending $20-70 for a box. But I already have the amp, so I had to be more picky... didn't want to just grab some subs in a box I didn't know anything about. Well, I didn't HAVE to be picky, but I wanted to be.

Examples (only found one with 10" subs in the NYC area):
10" @ $100
12" @ $150
12" @ $180
12" @ $200
12" @ $300

Budget rules all. DON'T go in to car audio without having your budget limitations defined above all else. There's a guy in Northern NJ whom sells supremely high-end stuff, and the SQ speaks for itself with said components, but be prepared to pay.

600W...hmmm...what's the THD rating?

To an extent. A well built ported box with the proper air channeling will matter.

Head over the the CarAudio forums before you start throwing cash at the system...seriously. You can get some GREAT deals on the classifieds there for REAL equipment. Put $60 aside for some Second Skin Damplifier on the doors and MDF speaker baffle rings...your output will improve TREMENDOUSLY over what throwing additional wattage would provide. GL

For that much money, what are you looking to buy? Just an amp and subs? Or an amp for your fronts and rears as well? Replace the stock fronts and rears...? There's a lot that can be done... and I'll be the first to admit that I can start you on a road by helping you define what you need, but actually getting the right parts... others can probably help you more on that one. I have limited knowledge. But I know that a budget doesn't mean much if you don't even know what you are looking to buy.

Yeeeeow. What most are unaware of is that a SIGNIFICANT portion of your 600W are going towards heating up the case, hooray for inefficent circuitry.

IMHO: Start stashing away. You won't be able to touch a full system until you have minimally double that... GL mang, don't try buying wine on a beer budget, save and enjoy when the time is right.
