I need help with this as well. I got my car pre-owned and always thought the car didn't have a sub since it had no bass at all. I come to find out that the previous owner blew it, so before he trader it in he unplugged it and I was never told.

He also apparently had his own system since all the speaker wires are covered in duct tape and several are cut

I had a full system in my last car and it got a little annoying so I wouldn't mind just fixing the OEM slot. I know it won't sound as good since it's open air-though I believe I read somewhere that someone cut the metal surrounding it and built a mini box.

They seem like they make the OEM sub pretty hard to replace.

I just read through a ton of threads on this and seems like the only way to get good sound is through a dedicated amp/sub box. The people who tried drop in subs didn't sound good until they added a aftermarket amp. By that point, you would have gotten a less than optimal sub just so it fits in the spot and purchased an amp, instead of just spending that on a 10-12" enclosure for opposite the dvd tray. I had just one 12" in my last car and it hit hard.

Since our owners messed with everything, I can't tell for sure if he modded the amp or any of the speakers for that matter without taking all the seats out-and that's more effort than it's worth for me.
