Unhappy Navigation Problem

So, last night I was driving through NYC, using my navigation. It wasn't working properly. For example...I was on 9th ave, it told me to make a left on 46th St but it was actually 48th St. that I was on. Even the screen name and map said it was 46th St when in actuality it was 48th St! Basically the navigation seemed to be 2 blocks off from the actual street.

When I drove into NYC, it was fine. But when I left that's when it started to act weird.

I'm currently running 3.80 version. (orange disk)

This is the first time I've ever had the navigation system act up on me. Anyone ever have this problem or similar happen to them? And if so, what was done to resolve it?

Any help/feedback would be appreciated!

i have been using a dvd based nav unit on various different cars for about the last 8 years...the bottom line is that if its not on the disc, the nav unit will get confused and you will get frustrated....the best way to navigate is to somewhat know where your going and have some sort of idea as to how to get there....that way if it starts acting like its lost, you can make some sort of decesion as to where to turn....

even if there is an updated disc for your unit, doesnt mean the updates will include the area you were having trouble in....

Maybe my post wasn't clear. What I mean is that the streets and names are showing on the navi screen and map is correct but my positioning wasn't correct. My vehicle position appeared to be on the correct street on the map but in actuality I was on a different street. The map showed me being on 46th St.,(which is where I needed to be) but I was actually on 48th St. instead!

Hope that clears things up.

There's a menu option to adjust your position. I don't recall specifically where that option is, but perhaps someone else does.

Works best, imho, if you're at an intersection for some other point that is easy to refernce on screen.

1) Were there tall buildings around your vehicle in that area? If so, there may have been enough interference with satellite reception to confuse the GPS. This is likely the case if your Navi position cleared up thereafter.

2) Pop the Navi DVD, clean and re-insert if your Navi problem remains. Have your Navi code available.

3) See Bearcat's post above^ re: resetting position.

Thanks, I'll look for that option and try it.

Yes, there were tall buildings in the area, Empire State building was one of them. But the strange thing is when I drove in last night, it was perfectly fine. And last week, both driving in and out of NYC was perfectly fine too. This only happened last night on my way out.

I did remove and reinsert the disk last night after I arrived home, so will drive around this weekend and see what happens.

Do you think that disconnecting the battery to rest it would help at all?

Thanks again guys for your help. Would prefer to avoid the dealership considering I'm, no longer under warranty.

In all likelihood, your nav didnt have enough satellites to triangulate your position accurately - heavy cloud cover, trees, buildings, you were inside a tunnel/garage etc. It will 'guess' your location until it locks onto enough sats and adjusts itself.

Sometimes I'll go into the hacked trip computer just to see what satellites are being tracked at the moment.

One other thought is that if you parked underground or in an enclosed place (both rather likely in New York), sometimes the GPS will have problems when you start off again. In the summer of 2007 when I took a vacation in Europe the TL sat in the garage at home for two weeks and when I came back, the Navi went haywire, had me driving off 180 degrees opposite from where I was actually going. It fixed itself after a mile or two. Most likely the issue you have is exactly what other people have said—the plethora of tall buildings in New York simply cut you off from the GPS satellites and so the Navi had to estimate your position based on your last known location.

I would recommend you NOT disconnect the battery but that you instead just go drive the car for half an hour in an area with no tall buildings nor heavy trees overhanging the road. If you disconnect the battery, you'll have to re-enter your Navi and radio codes, and that's a nuisance.

That night I did check the navi diagnostic screen and it showed only 4 satellites tracking...so maybe not enough satellites?

I was parked in a parking garage for over 6hrs and it happenend immediatly once I got back in the car and drove away out of the parking garage.
I didn't know that others have had similar problems with the navi due to parking in a garage. Hearing this puts my mind at ease. I was ready to take it to the dealership but I think I'll reconsider unless the problem persists.

On another note...I did drive it around all weekend and used the navi a couple times and it seemed to be fine, so we'll see how it is after a few more uses.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll keep you posted should it happen again.

I'm having more problems than that. It started pretty low-key - i'm on the expressway and it says "not on a digitized road" ???

then it freezes up when tracking a destination - like I'm supposed to cross a street 1 mile from where i'm at, i'm just getting across it and the nav is frozen in the past, it suddently wakes up and goes nuts to my current position.

nothing helps. clean dvd, latest version, no tall buildings, set the car position manually.

I guess it's up to the dealership now - i now they will rip me off thow

I just started having the same problem. I have a 2005 TL and the NAVI had been working flawlessly up until this point. Have you had any luck correcting this problem?

My Story:

Spoke to Alpine USA repair center - United Radio 1-800-634-8606 somewhere in the state of NY

Took the disc player out of the trunk - sent it to them - 2 weeks later they called me saying there was nothing wrong with it , they just did some updates - FREE - then they mailed it back to me

Installed it back in - it's been working 100% ever since

Good luck !

Hello Bogdan,

Can you indicate a bit about what kind of issues your were facing in your navigation system? I recently posted a thread on this site: my '04 TL's navi is showing the car in a different location from where it is. As well, the navigation is constantly resetting itself or showing the home screen only. If you had similar issues, perhaps I should be contacting whomever handles Alpine in Canada.

Many thanks!

I had something similar happen to me as well. Sunny day, no clouds. The NAV had me on the wrong road, it was the next one over in a small town. It finally figured itself out, but it was a pain at the time. I had two other people with me and we were trying to find something to eat!

Adjusting the car's position did not work for me. I was running the latest disc version.

All They told me is they did a "update" of the DVD-Rom drive. Works for me, since it fixed the problem and they did not charge me

I just got an '07 TL-S and my navi has a lag when typing in letters, numbers etc. Also, when trying to route a destination it just freezes. It's happened twice now.

Is there anything I can troubleshoot before taking it into the dealer?

After reading threads here and doing some research, I removed the navi unit from the trunk and sent it out to Alpine. Had it back with 5 days, problem fixed. I believe the total cost was $170!

Funny thing is...I went to the dealership first and the service write told me it would cost me $350 doing it through the dealership and it takes longer to receive it back from Apline that way! Told me to save my money and do it myself. It's nice to still have some cool service writers at the dealership.
