Navi screen always on?
Navi screen always on?
Do you guys always have your navi screen on, either in map or audio modes?
Any concerns that always having it on will reduce the life of the screen? Or is it designed to last past a decade?

I only have mine on when I need it or if some one asks me to turn it on so they can watch it. Any other time it's off.
I am sure it was built to be on a lot and you shouldn't have to worry about the life of the screen. I sold my 99 TL to my cousin and it has a navi and screen looks just like the day I bought it.

I was at local electronic store yeserday. LCD manufactures now guarantee 60,000hrs with their screen before lamp needs to be replaced. that's 11 years if screen is on 24 hours a day. 30+ years based on 8 hours a day operation.

still working perfectly after 2 years. I don't think I'll have the TV, or the car when they reach 60,000 hours.

as for LCD screens, no, they dont get burn-in, the only real part that can fail over time is the backlight bulbs. they do get dimmer over time, but as some people have said, they have a pretty long "half-life", time before the bulbs are half as bright as they were when they were new... however, one of the worst things for CCFL bulbs is to run them when cold... even though the CCFL stands for COLD Cathode Flourescent, they dont actually like to be operated in cold weather. They are also not as bright at first when turned on when cold, thats why a lof LCD monitors are a little dim at first, and quickly brighten up. Where I work, we deal with LCD panel manufacturers (not like sony, sharp, etc. but companies like Rockwell Collins, Barco, IS&S, etc.). In their displays, a lot of times they actually have heaters to get the display up to full brightness quickly when the screen has been sitting in a cold envronment... quikcly not only to allow the screens to be bright quickly, but also to minimize the times the bulbs are operated when cold.

and for anyone interested in some reading...
