Nav question...What the hell is the difference between restaurants and eating places?

Sometimes when you're looking for the closest named restaurant (say for example, Applebee's), it'll pull up the option of choosing between restaurants and eating places (and have entries under both). I don't get the wisdom of this. It's just one more annoying step. Does anyone know what the supposed difference is?

To me..a "eating place" is crap food like McDoogles, and a "restaurant" is someplace that has food that is actually edible.
