NAV Icon Question

I keep noticing very small green icons on my navigation screen. They don't seem to be located by anything in particular. It is a tiny green box with what looks like a little green flag on top of the box. What does this icon represent?

I belive they are simply general Points of Interest, although there is a green flag marking a school in my neighborhood, along with other various buildings that really have no relation to tourists (i.e., you wouldn't need to know there's a school if you're travelling through a tourist area)

The Navi manual indicates that the green houses with flags are schools.

They mark them so you can find a school, pull in, learn how to read, then pick up the f'ng manual and read it ...
