Nav 2 Dvd Conversion Help In La....

Alright, I'm ready to convert my Nav 2 DVD and called a few places to get some prices. One of the places was Al & Ed's and they quoted me a price anywhere from $1500-$1750 (different locations) for everything (harness, install, dvd player, etc.).

Is that a good price? Has anyone in LA done this yet and if so where did you go or does anyone know of a good place to go to get it done? Is Al & Ed's a good place to get something like this done at?

Thanks for any help

Do you already have nav and just want to add a dvd player. If so, you are getting ripped big time.

For Video Input , you need a Nav video converter for ~$175

https://acurazine.com/forums/sponsored-sales-group-buys-10/christmas-groupbuy-navi-video-conversion-325875/

For Audio Input, you need a Aux-In adapter for ~ $90

https://acurazine.com/forums/automotive-news-6/gm-2005-hydra-matic-6-speed-129030/

Then you need a DVD player like this for ~$130

Looking at ~$395 + Installation

Whoa whoa whoa man. Dont do anything rash. Head to the black market/group buy section until you see one of the group buy's for Dom's TvandNavtoGo Kit. The group buy is over, but that thread will telll you everything you need to know about the conversion. I ordered mine without the group buy a couple of days ago for 275 WITH the plug and play harness to make the install much easier. You should definitely check out the thread and try doing it yourself. You can buy a really small dvd player at best by for less than 100 bucks. Personally, I went and got the new Slim PS2 for 150. So the whole project has cost me 425 so far. This definitely seems like a do it yourselfer, especially whne it involves saving 1000+ bucks.

Ah, you beat me to it. Well. I'm going to be ghetto with mine and use one of those tape hookups in the headphone jack. hahaha, and i'll use the fm transmitter when i'm trying to show off my "wireless" setup.

Yes, I already have nav and just want to convert it. I thought that was kinda high. $395 does seem alot better. lol As far as installing it, I would rather have someone who knows what they're doing do it since I'm not really familiar with running the wires and installing the components and all the other stuff.

Your best bet is probably to find someone on this forum who's willin to help on the install. The plug and play makes video installation as easy as unplugging and replugging, but the sound options are where things get messy. The video part is something a 6 year old girl could handle, but the sound looks like something that might be out of your league, unless you want to go with an fm modulator that would give you pisspoor sound quality or a tape player that would result in a cord being dragged to the front of your car.

Too bad no one mentioned the group buy here. I had no idea it happened. I would love to get the converter for less.

I dare you to find a 6 year old girl that could get the dash apart to reach the back of the head unit. Plugging in the cables is the easy part. It took me about 3 hours to to it when I installed my music link. After two weeks of the music link, I'm ready to pull it out and install a PIE X3, Blitz iPod UI, nav converter, and a DVD player. Can anybody spare their 6 year old girl for this? LOL!!

I would have liked to get in on that too. I'd want the plug and play version. I don't know if that was an option on the group buy.

I think someone on this forum got the Dom's TvandNavtoGo Kit + backup camera installed for $1000. Without the backup camera, $700 - $800 should be right.

Here is the breakdown of what it cost me:

Dom's converter = $150
DVD player = $125
installation = $400

Yes, the audio is the worst. The installer spliced into the XM line. DVD sound gets cut in half. I'm still waiting for Bliztsafe to come out with 05 TL aux adapter. I've heard that a line driver could boost the sound. Can anyone confirm?

As for video, not the best, but considering it's a nav screen, it's not bad. I get wavey lines running thru the image especially when I step on the gas. A video filter should help with that.

You should check out the link below for a good aux-in solution.

I've been thinking about getting Dom's converter, but your problem with wavey lines scares me a little. I don't want that. Although I did notice some lines in my display the other morning when the system was booting up and the screen was still blank. I wonder if anybody else has seen this?

I don't think the lines appear on everyones. I've only heard of one other person with this problem. It's not too noticeable that it takes away from the joy of knowing you can watch a movie in your driver's seat.

I wonder if it's Dom's converter or the paricular DVD player he is using. I've been looking at some DVD Players made by Pyle (www.pyleaudio.com). I used some of their stuff many years ago. They were not the highest quality back then. I like the 1/2 DIN DVD players that they offer.

Anybody have any of these players?

I bought an Innovateck (?) from some place on ebay, $69.00 for the DVD player which has a built in TV tuner (very cool) and come with a window film antenna, remote control and remote sensor and an aux input.

The remote I have is EXACTLY the same as the Pyle remote shown above.

I have priced getting the converter, and a dvd player installed in my tl as well.
1st price was $ 765. This guy did not know what he was talking about it. I mentioned the converter, and he told me no converter was necessary. He told me they would just "rig" the wires in the back and make it happen. I almost ran out of that store.
2nd price was $ 1200. I thought this was high. These people were going to us a converter that supposedly costs $650. Then $175 for a DVD player, and the rest was labor. Sorry, but I would not even go to them with vaseline.
3rd price was $850. This was not too bad, so I was planning on going back to them. Thanks to this forum, I have contacted tvandnav2go.com, and will be buying all necessary parts from them, + a slim Playstation 2.
Once this is all done, I will post pictures so everyone can see how it came out.
I love this website!

Can't wait to see your set up. I am hoping to add a dvd player + backup camera to my TL also. Anyone know of any shops in the LA area?

Strangely enough, the remote control for the Myron and Davis looks exactly the same as the last pic. I wonder if it's the same company making all of these low cost players. If you're only going to use it to play movies then they'll all work just fine. The small size makes them so much easier to install in the glove.

I'm not sure what causes the wavey lines but someone else posted that an inline filter took care of it. I'm not sure what that is but I'll be looking it up.

That doesnt seem to bad overall. Anyone familiar with the Excel dvd player they have compared to the others that are listed above?

I've searched on the web, ebay and tvandnav2go's website and cannot find anything about an Excel 8550 DVD Player. I would not use an FM Modulator for the sound. I would get the PIE X3 or check out the new iPod w/aux in interface.

Ya, I searched also for that 8550 dvd player and found nothing. They said they use it for all the cars they do(Benz, Acura, etc).

So jj, all I need is the X3-HON03 adaptor, the plug and play, and the dvd player and I'm set?
