Angry my dilemma with NAVI

Ok here's my situation....I recently bought an 05 TL with NAVI. I did not know too much of the history on the car other then the fact that is was a vehicle that was previously in an accident. The vehicle came from the US and I brought it to Canada. The car is in excellent condition and looks and drives like new.

Yesterday I was playing around with my friends TL navi, and was surprised to find out that the TL Navi is a touch screen! Since this is the first TL that I am the owner of, I was surprised, and went back to my car to try it out, and to my dismay, my touch screen does not work. When I touch the screen, nothing happens other then my finger pressing against the screen. The screen feels very soft, and the image seems to smudge, "as though it is an LCD screen or laptop screen that I am touching......does anyone know what could be wrong?? Am I missing something here?? Is there a part that goes on top of the screen to make it touch?? I don't think the screen was replaced in my car, as it looks factory. Can anyone perhaps give me some info.

the navi screen on the TL is touch screen straight from the factory.

Something smells fishy. It could be possible that some connection is loose.

I say take it back to the dealership. Good luck!

well here is the problem...the car was imported to from the US to Canada, so in the Canadian dealers won't repair it under warranty. Does anyone know if the screen is a 2 peice meaning, the screen and then a touch panel attached to it? I just tried going into diagnostic mode, and now my navi just beeps when I press the the joy stick button...and wont go into navi mode! Stressssssss!

That's strange. My NAV screen is hard glass, not soft at all. Sounds like someone put in some kind of aftermarket screen, or removed the glass (if that's even possible).

My 06 TL's NAVI has the laptop like screen (soft to the touch) and the touchscreen functionality works. I also had an 03 Accord with NAVI that had the glass like screen. It's touchscreen was recessed and worked using IR sensors.

This may sound strange, but are you sure it's a factory Nav system? You might post a photo.

Okay, after questioning my sanity, it turns out I'm insane. My Nav screen is not glass, but seems to be plastic. However, it is still not soft as you are describing.

I would check the connections to the Navi unit in your trunk. Pull away the trunk trim on the right side by removing the tie-down screws and removing the plastic trim covering the rear-most part of the trunk. You'll see the cables plugged into the Navi unit once you do this. Make sure all of them are firmly plugged into the rear of the unit.

If they are, then you might have to take your dash apart to make sure all the harnesses are plugged firmly into the navi screen.

If that doesn't work, I can get you a schematic of the pin layout which will have the touchscreen control wires clearly marked. From that, you could check continuity from the rear of the screen to the navi unit in the trunk.

thanks guys for all your answers. Last night I decided to disconnect my battery to hopefully reset the system. I ended up getting my NAVI to stop beeping and started working again. Touch panel still does not work. I am going to check the connections in the trunk, and also post some pics online for you all to view.
thanks

If you disconnected the battery, you should have been required to enter security codes into the unit. Did you? I still wonder if you have a factory nav in the car. Pics??

One More Question

Are you able to touch the "nag" button? Are you able to touch the other screens i.e. XM, Radio, CD/DVD etc. or is it only when you are using the navigation? It might help to narrow down the possibilities w/o pics.

I am unable to use any touch screen features. When I disconnected the battery (for 5 seconds), it did not ask for any codes for the radio nor the navi. I believe that my navi is factory, as it does have all the components of a factory navi including the dvd unit in the trunk with the orange coloured DVD in it. All functionality of the NAVI, radio, cd, bluetooth, voice command for the navi system and voice dialing for the bluetooth works, which leads me to believe that the Navi is from factory, or someone did one hell of a good job doing a conversion.

Maybe someone put the RL screen in it if it had to be replaced from the accident? Is the RL screen cheaper since it is not touchscreen?

There is an adjustment for the sensitivity of the touch screen in the setup. Have you tried to adjust the sensitivity??

thanks for the suggestion...hmmm...have not tried that. Is that in the diagnostic mode? Remember right now I dont have any touch screen functionality...so this would have to be adjusted with the joystick if possible at all.

Start the car and wait for the Navi to boot. Then hold down the Map-Menu-Cancel buttons all at the same. This will bring you to the diagnostic screen. You can move around the diagnostic screen using the joystick. One of the options is Monitor Check. Joystick to it and press in on the joystick to select it. One of the options under monitor check is the touchscreen sensitivity.

I wonder why you didn't have to enter any codes into the nav or radio when you disconnected the battery?

it all depends on how long the battery is disconnected. if it's less than 5 minutes it doesn't ask for the codes.

Screen could have been broken in the accident...damn dog in the middle of the back seat.

I think Non-touch LCD screens are a lot cheaper than touch LCD screens...but how do you get past the nag screen..or are you stuck on the audio screen? The pressure sensor on the screen could also be shot.

I imagine he can navigate all options and "push" buttons by using the joystick.

I am able to get past the nag screen by pressing the joystick button. I think that I might have to just replace the screen. Does anyone have any idea what a used screen would run me. This weekend I checked all the connections at the back near the DVD rom unit...all appear to be ok.
