Question Motorola E815 OBEX & TL

Hello Guys,

Any of you hacked your Motorola E815 phone to get OBEX working?.. I read some threads about it (Howard forums).. and was wondering if anyone enabled it so it can transfer the phonebook to the TL?

THanks

Yes, I did my brother's and father's phones. The directions we had sucked. The ones from Howard Forums look a bit better. We did eventually get it done. They were happy as could be....

I will warn...this is not for the uninitiated. It involves patching 2 memory locations (changing the bits at various hex addresses) within a "seam". Seams are, from what I can tell blocks of code/memory in the phone.

I would not recommend doing this unless you are very comfortable with loading software on you machine that is unverifiable and you are OK with the possibility of trashing your phone. I write code for a living so, hell, I'll try anything. As soon as I was done I un-installed all the crap required so I can't even remember what it was.

My bro also had some other key sequence that enabled the DUN the phone. That' simple and at Howard forums.

All I can say is Verizon (his service and yours too I assume) is just bullshit for disabling those features. Motorola puts the features there and Verizon has the balls to hamstring it and charge you for it.

Moving off topic...As for me, my Cingular T610 was fully enabled from the start and SE has tons of free software (even EXTNDConnect) downloads so I guess you know what I really think.

OBEX stands for OBject EXchange. It is the protocol used to transfer stuff (like contacts, images, ringtones, etc) using bluetooth between phones or other bluetooth devices. The protocol was initially developed for IrDA but is now also used in bluetooth. It is one of the very basic bluetooth protocols but some service providers (read Verizon) disable it to prevent users from being able to freely add ringtones and wallpapers to their phones. IMO, what they're doing is extremely lame and shouldn't even be permitted by law.

As EXTREMELY lame as it is I doubt it is actually illegal. Basically if the lambs keep lining up in droves and pay $4.95/month for all the add-ons being peddled to them then who's to blame the large corps for doing it. It is the new economy to "nickel and dime" people to death.

$4.95/mo for ring-tones. "Baaaa" says the dumb little lamb !
$3.95/mo for weather updates "Baaaa" says the dumb little lamb !

Here little lamb.... I have a new useless feature for you.....It's called VCAST (video on your cell phone). That will be $3.95/mo....cha ching.

Not that I have an opinion.

It's not illegal, but it should be made illegal

Service providers shouldn't be able to cripple a phone and then sell that same phone without even changing the model name . I'm fine with them making money for a service or even charging the user for the silliest of services. But don't be selling a phone called Treo 650 when it doesn't support all the features listed on the official Treo website. Call it Treo 650 Verizon's AssF***ed Edition or something.

Not that this kind of crap will ever stop a determined user from getting the most out of his phone.
