Low level convertor / amp / sub

Low level convertor / amp / sub
So I installed my amp,crossover and sub last night.
I tapped the sub wires for my L.O.C and everything seems to work.
I did notice at first that I wasnt able to adjust treble, bass, center etc.. it was all set to 0 level.
The tuning knob was acting all funny where if I would turn it once, it wouldnt increase or decrease the tuning levels.
Eventually, I switched over to XM and was able to make the adjustments. Following that I switched to AM/FM/ CD / IPOD and adjustments seem to be working?
Does the radio have to reinitialize itself or something to recognize another sub is connected?
Is there a specific L.O.C that I should use? I bought a generic one from eBay btw.
