Question Limits of Our Navigation...

Hello all,

I haev yet another question that is driving me up the wall that I can't seem to solve on my own.

I own a 2004 Black 5 AT NAVI TL. The car is from the USA. I live in Canada. When I brought the car into Canada, the Navi displayed the street I was driving on but it did not have the Canadian address book. In other words if I would try to type in my street name it would not come up and in the change state option Canadian provinces were not listed. I asked the gentleman I bought the car from to fix this problem for me which he did.

I now have the option of turning the Navi to English or French at startup. I can also change the province from any canadian province to any US state. I am able to find US addresses as well as Canadian addresses. In short, I can take a trip to the US and suffer absolutely no change in the functionnality of the Navi form one country to the other.

MY QUESTION: I now would like to get the updated DVD 3.40. My nearest dealer tells me that he asked the '' Tech '' and apparently it is impossible to update my system so it would work in Canada and the US. When I asked him how come it's working flawlessly now he changes the subject and tells me that it will not work.

Can someone tell me if I can buy an Updated DVD for my TL ?

If so, does it matter if I purchase it from www.acura.ca or www.acura.com ?

If I would like it to take canadian addresses, should I buy the canadian version of the DVD ? or the America version ?

Please write back.
Sincerely,
Dazed and Confused...

Not sure how this will help determine your query, but on the Navi SETUP info, Page 4, select System Info, then there is a Database field. Does it say Continental US? If so, the navi disc was intended for US. The database info and version information is there also. I would copy that information and have it handy when you make this query to whoever you contact about purchasing a newer disc. I am certin there is a solution or settings to accomodate you as many people live along and cross our borders, eh?

Perhaps your local will determine a disc version intended for your geographic area.

Good luck, eh.

It does say Continental US.

I'll be making these phone calls and finding my answer from those phone numbers that were posted above.

I'll post the answer to the question shortly.

If anyone has any more info let me know.

Thanks

Lightbulb Change NAVI to Canada

crazy is correct, you can change your NAVI setting to be Canada. I just checked on my TL.

1) Press and hold the MAP + MENU + CANCEL buttons simultaneously until the NAVI Diagnostics screen appears.

2) Select NAVI SYSTEM button...a diagnostic chart will appear with a 'bing'.

3) Select the CHG CANADA button

4) A pop up window will ask you to confirm.

Done! <chirp>

It may change the database immediately, or you may have to reboot the Navi (ignition off - and on again....to the 'Nag' Screen.

Good luck!

If you click on the link that was offered, you will get the answer. There are four pages of Canadian locations on the NA Map.

MR 1...

I wish it wre that simple.

The 2 links have the same locations. Weather I get the Canada DVD or the US DVD the mapping info will be identical.

The question is which one will be compatible with my TL ?

Thanks to all those who are trying to help me !

Well I finally got my answer. A bit dissapointed but hey, it's no biggie.

So I have to orer the Update disc from the US. The 3.5 Version is coming out in October so I'll wait it out until then.

The only stupid part is that I can't order it myself. Because it is a US version, I have to go through the dealer. I am not allowed to order it for delivery to my home address.

I think that's a bit ridiculous but who am I to judge.

Thanks again for all you help with this issue !

Using http://www.acuranavi.com/ website to order the DVD update, you cannot select a Non-USA address (State and Country). I am guessing that is why Alpine is telling you to use an USA dealership to order the DVD update and then they can mail it to you in Canada.

Actually it does'nt have to be a US dealership. It can be any dealership here in Canada as well.

So to note a slightly different take on the issue, the COVERAGE is the same no matter whether you use the US disc or the Canadian disc, or whether you go into the Navi diagnostic screen and change the option there, correct? That is to say, the coverage of Canadian roads is still largely lacking outside of the major cities?

BTW, I found that I can search for addresses in Quebec, at least, without changing any settings on my US Navi. Just a case of using the "correct" abbreviation, which on mine was QC instead of PQ. Didn't try any other provinces except BC (which would be obvious anyway).

The physical Navi DVDs for version 3.40C are the same for Canada and the US. My guess is 3.5 will be the same for both countries as well.

The link to order the updates in Canada is:
http://www.acuranavi.com/canada/en/

Both US and CA DVDs are available through: https://iweb.alpine-usa.com

I'm not sure why that is? Seems strange that the Canadian discs don't work in your TL.

It looks like all the files are the same as well, the start-up graphic hack that is discussed in the sticky thread in this sub-forum works for Canadian TLs as well.
