That's what happened to me. I had the 102s and a guy was selling some unused 110s. I wasn't really planning on buying them and then be let me hook them up in my car and that was it.

 

See. One minute your idly curious so you give them a listen. Next thing you know you're sucked in and breaking out the credit card. lol That's why you'd see me running if I came any where near those 110's
Seriously though, they are way out of my budget for this project. priorities tend to change when your married with kids. the wife would string me up by my you know what if I bought those. Especially since I have other "hobbies" like the 5GHz water-cooled computer that I built with triple 24" monitor setup. Those monitors were $800 each when I bought them. lol
So does Anybody have any recommendations on good tweets that can play down to 2K comfortably and are... more budget friendly?

btw what did you think of the 650's?

 

The 102 is a very good tweeter that will play 2khz just fine. If I had a complaint it would be the top end. They're not a dull tweeter by any means but they roll off a bit up top. Many people like Morel tweeters. I hear they have more top end than the 102s but I can't say from first hand experience.

 

So I have question about the location of our tweeters. I've read that even though they are directed at the windshield performance is still very good unlike other cars with similar designs. So should I be concerned about off axis response at all or just look at on axis? I'm really leaning toward the Scan Illuminator's.

 

The 650's were awesome. I didn't get too much time listening to them - but from what I heard I LOVED them. They were demo'd against the top Hertz speakers, and the 650's with the 110 blew everything away. Even with the 102's they sounded great, but not as much snap on the tweets.

Into overclocking, eh?

 

For that price range I'd expect nothing less than perfection. Keep in mind a huge part of how they sound in your car will be installation and tuning. If those aren't dialed in you may be disappointed.


Yep I like to dabble with it. Water cooling allows me to take things up an extra notch two beyond what a good heat sink can do.

 

One nice thing about those tweeters is they sounded great just plugging them in laying loose on the dash with no tuning. I agree tuning is very important but you will notice a large difference just by slapping them in.

 

Matt, what would be the least expensive and/or intrusive way of mounting large format tweeters like this? Kicks are $400...

 

That's a tough one because kicks sounded great but I have two pairs of kicks without the provision for a tweeter for well over $600, I'm not paying another penny for kicks lol.

I did a temporary kick setup with these tweeters with some aluminum bar stock and velcro. The aluminum was bolted under the dash and the tweets were velcroed to the other end. This was just to see how they sounded. I know where I'm going to put them now but they're still temporarily mounted so I haven't officially provided a permanent solution.

There are advantages of both setups but if installation were not an issue I would probably go kicks.

 

If we're talking purely getting the tweeters out of the way, kicks can be very nice. I keep thinking you have a 3-way setup. I have two pairs of kicks right now. One pair does not fit because it has an enclosure on the back that does not clear the frame without major surgery. Both sets were made for the 430 midrange which is about the same size as the 110 tweeter. They take up less than 1" of foot space, most people don't notice they're there. I can set my 110s in them to see if the clearance is there depth wise but diameter wise mine are smaller because they were machined. I would sell them for a good price because they were slightly damaged in shipping, purely cosmetic and I have them sitting here not being used and I'm out $300. I can remove the enclosure that causes the mounting depth problem.

 

How much would you be willing to part with the kicks for? I tried PMing you but your box is full.

 

Probably half price or less. I bought them assuming they would fit and be undamaged, I certainly wouldn't have paid what I paid, I would not have bought them if I had known the condition and fitment. They should be fine for tweeters though since they don't require an enclosure.
