iPhone comes out this Friday
iPhone comes out this Friday
I was just wondering if anyone is planning to stand in line on Friday (June 29th) at their neighborhood AT&T store or Apple Store to get the new iPhone? The news channels have been suggesting that even with a $500-600 price, they expect that there will be people standing in line (or even arriving the evening before) to be sure and get one the first day. It looks pretty cool and there really is nothing like it on the market (especially with a built in iPod).
What do you think?
What do you think?
Nope. My phone still makes and receives calls and my Ipod still plays music, so I plan on waiting until one or the other breaks before upgrading. Also, I hate AT&T, but I liked Cingular so I'm planning on seeing how this takeover B.S. works out - I don't want to sign a new contract right now.

well if its anything like the ipod i wont buy it. i dont really have a problem with apple products, just the fact that everyone who gets one feels the need to brag like its a status symbol. i bought a creative zen, and the only thing i hear is "why didnt you buy an ipod? its better ya know"

^^^^I feel bad for that guy, he dosen't know what he's missing....
I'm planning on buying the iPhone later on when my contract expires and they get all the prelim bugs worked out. I run my business with apples and i have never had a single problem with them. Seems like the only computers that actually work these days.....

btw, this is going to be locked and sent to off topics..
Just a head up to the guys thinking about buying one, read this first:
1.
I'm being told by a friend who is a COR Manager in Philly that There is going to be specific IPhone Plans with a base starting price of over $100/mo. No customization, No choosing your features, No early N&W, NO FAN DISCOUNTING ALLOWED!!!!! Apple is Making a 60% margin on this phone!!!! Plus they get a piece of this special plan. GREEDY
2.
Price: $600-$800 with a 2-yr contract. You could by 2 8525's for that kind of money.
3.
If the Iphone breaks(and it will) Cingular will not help the customer out even through XBM. The customer will have to go to an Apple store (Good luck finding one) to exchange it (with a $100 deductible) or mail it away and wait up to 2 weeks for a new one(no phone for 2 WEEKS. AHHHHHHH)
4.
It's pretty big for a phone – bigger than the Treo 750, BlackBerry Pearl & 8525.I TS HUGH(imagine holding a phone to your head that's almost 2x as big as the 8525) - Also were will you carry it (Wont fit in your pocket)And who wants a phone sticking out 4 inches from there waist on a clip???(The Blackjack fits in your shirt pocket)
5.
The design places too much emphasis on the product as a phone, and not enough on PDA features (entering new contacts or appointments), iPod features (not enough memory), or data connectivity (EDGE instead of a true 3G network?)
6.
Apple says there is only a 5 hour talk time. (so as we all know with all phones cut that in half) and that's if you DON'T use the music/video player or Internet. AND NO REMOVABLE BATTERY SO YOU CAN'T EVEN SWAP THEM OUT - There goes the Power Users
7.
NO 3G - AHHHH WHAT??? - So no Cellular Video or downloading LARGE attachments from Email
8.
2MP camera (but its a low end optic so pictures look just as bad as a VGA Camera)
9.
No expansion Slot so there is no way to add additional memory once you fill up the built in memory
10.
Apple has come out stating that there will be " no 3rd-party apps" going into the iPhone, citing stability concerns as the primary reason. A "SMARTPHONE" with NO ability for expansion programs, what's so "SMART" about that. (Windows, Palm, Blackberry & Symbian OS's have thousands of expansion programs) - There goes the Road Warrior customers(especially realtors)
11.
No support for excel or PowerPoint - There goes the Business Customers
12.
NO IM Client (That right no AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ or even the APPLE IM Client Ichat) - There goes the Teen market
13.
This Phone was NOT made for texters (How are you going to text quickly on a touchscreen) - There goes the Teen market Again
14.
The phone supports POP3/SMTP & IMAP mail servers, but not Exchange or Blackberry servers. So no automatic PUSH email you actually have to ask it to check your email - There Goes the Business Customers Again
15.
Google Maps, yay, but no GPS functionality? Come on - if you're going to 'reinvent' the phone, GPS should be in there. Several high-end phones have it, so why not the iPhone? So what's the point - 8800 has it built in (Half our other phones can use GPS with the telenav puck)
16.
No support for MP3 only Apples proprietary ITUNES AAC format (So you got to spend HOURS converting our MP3 collection into Itunes before you can load any music on the phone)
17.
If you want to purchase music you HAVE to do it from ITUNES for $0.99, our windows devices allow you to purchase music from multiple companies for as little as $0.59 or Rent all the music you want for only $14.99(With a free year on the Sync or Blackjack
18.
CANT USE ITUNES AS RINGTONES
19.
NO removable SIM card(WHAT?????) so if SIM goes bad you need a new phone
20.
Screen is Made of a semi-plastic material that will scratch easily(AKA IPOD) and will not stand up to demands of modern life.
21.
Fingers constantly smudging the screen. Yes, we're sure the touchscreen UI is wondrous, but watching video on a screen covered in fingerprints… great! and who wants to watch movies with fingerprints all over the screen
22.
Will not work one Handed at all. The Iphone is designed to be held by one have and controlled with the index finger on the other. (isn't the whole world used to dialing with there thumbs....)
23.
NO AIRPLANE MODE (IE you Cant turn off the transmitter like you can in all our other PDA/Smartphones SO you cant use it for music or movies when on a plane. FAA Will not allow it)
24.
NO voice Command (so good luck dialing on a touch screen when driving Again not designed to be dialed with your thumb)
25.
The most important feature of the included browser (Safari) seems to be that it zooms in and out, but many phones have browsers, so this is not a big deal
26.
NO JAVA support. Apple's commercials seam to claim that you can view any website (Well most use Java, so NO YOU CANT)
Cliffs: It's going to suck

I may get it after my Verizon contract is up. I get out at the end of December. Maybe they'll have the second or third version out by then, $100 for a phone and data plan isn't that bad depending on the minutes involved.
It better work when attached to my USAspec damnit.

$600 for a strictly proprietary useful phone with very limited capabilities and no operating system? Don't make me laugh, my XV6700 runs circles around that and most other phones and it's touchscreen as well. But it also gives me the flexibility of sliding keyboard and top notch PDA functions, without worrying about locking the face for fear of accidental dialing. I'll pass on this super-sized iPod.

wow, after reading all those reasons, im not sure id get one even if money wasnt an issue. haha, i did check out that xv6700 darksom was bragging about, and gotta hand it to ya, looks nice. too bad im with cingular. guess ill stick with my regular phone and ipod
Overrated! But if you must get it, just wait until all the hype dies down and the bugs are fixed. The price will drop and you'll get a better end product.
On another note, hopefully with the new I-Phone out, other comparable products in the AT&T/Cingular family will drop in prices. Woohoo!

The price is $499 or $599 for the 4gig or 8 gig respectively.
8-Hour Talktime.
This COR Manager has never touched the phone nor has seen anyone use it. They have no clue on the camera quality.
There is an Airplane mode. It actually shows a picture of the airplane when in that mode in the upper left corner.
What store does this manager work at?
Looks like a cool phone, but I have no interest in it. I wouldn't even consider it because it doesn't have a "real" keyboard on it. I email and text a lot from my phone and I need tactile feel on the keyboard. I think the touch screen is ok, but not for somebody who types a lot.
I'm not a big fan of the iPod craze either. I think it's brand name hype more than anything. I'd rather have a generic MP3 player that I could get subscription service on rather than be forced to use iTunes. Despite all that it does look like a pretty cool phone.

Yeah, much of that info is incorrect. Just watch the video demonstration on the Apple site and you'll see the airplane mode and the reasonable size. Also, I just read that there are some third-party companies getting involved, including some games giants like EA.
I agree about waiting for iPhone 2.0. The lack of 3G is a bummer as is no GPS. While I don't use 3G on my Blackjack (kills the battery in a matter of hours), I'd expect it from such an advanced phone. As it stands, EDGE is usually fast enough for me. Plus, the iPhone's WiFi support can help with the data speed problem, if there is coverage.

Everyone says lack of 3g is a main factor. 3g is only availiable in 35% of Cingular/At&t's service area. Everywhere else has Edge.....we have 3g here in San Diego, and we are supposed to have 3g everywhere, but more often than not a run on Edge most of the time. So I find it hard to believe that those who live in smaller towns rely on it being 3g. HSPDA will be the next thing, and At&t should concentrate on saturating the market with those devices ready for the future.
GREEDY
That is pure speculation up to this point. Fact is: the data plans for the iPhone are currently rumored to be in the $35-$45/mo range for unlimited data and texts, which is the same as every other unlimited data plan AT&T offers with every other PDA phone.
2.
Price: $600-$800 with a 2-yr contract. You could by 2 8525's for that kind of money.
False. The price was initially revealed to be $500-$600, substantially different than your falsely inflated price points.
AHHHHHHH)
AT&T does not offer insurance on ANY high-end PDA phone. Same goes with all other wireless carriers due to the risk of fraud. FUD.
You make it sound like it's going to be a huge brick, when in fact the new demonstration video on apple's web site makes the phone look perhaps slightly bigger than other PDA phones. Borderline false exaggeration on your part to prove a hollow point.
5.
The design places too much emphasis on the product as a phone, and not enough on PDA features (entering new contacts or appointments), iPod features (not enough memory), or data connectivity (EDGE instead of a true 3G network?)
EDGE is more heavily deployed than 3G. Besides, the iPhone will also support WiFi. When was the last time you needed to download a huge file and weren't within range of a WiFi hotspot?
100% FALSE. The talk time is listed as 8 hours on Apple's own web site. Are you seriously going to talk for 8 straight hours on the phone without an overnight recharge? Seriously.
7.
NO 3G - AHHHH WHAT??? - So no Cellular Video or downloading LARGE attachments from Email
You try to make the same hollow argument twice just to make your list look bigger.
8.
2MP camera (but its a low end optic so pictures look just as bad as a VGA Camera)
False. Look at this picture taken with the iPhone and tell me to my face that it looks like crap: http://images.macrumors.com/article/...21oqh0_300.jpg
9.
No expansion Slot so there is no way to add additional memory once you fill up the built in memory
The first iPhone shortcoming you've truthfully pointed out in 9 points so far.
Who cares? 3rd party development will happen through the web browser. Besides, Apple has already made it clear that the iPhone is NOT for business users. In fact, corporate users will NOT be allowed to purchase an iPhone, only personally accounts.
11.
No support for excel or PowerPoint - There goes the Business Customers
Partially false. The iPhone will be able to open Excel files. See point 10: the iPhone was never designed for business users from the start.
12.
NO IM Client (That right no AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ or even the APPLE IM Client Ichat) - There goes the Teen market
AIM, Yahoo, MSN connectivity has already been proven to be available over the Safari browser.
13.
This Phone was NOT made for texters (How are you going to text quickly on a touchscreen) - There goes the Teen market Again
100% conjecture at this point. You haven't used the touchscreen keyboard so you have no idea how easy or hard it is to use. So far, everyone who has actually used the iPhone says that the keyboard does take a couple of days of getting used to, but after that it's as fast as any keyboard on any smartphone.
14.
The phone supports POP3/SMTP & IMAP mail servers, but not Exchange or Blackberry servers. So no automatic PUSH email you actually have to ask it to check your email - There Goes the Business Customers Again
iPhone wasn't designed for business customers. Besides, who cares? If your email doesn't come in POP3, SMTP, or IMAP form, then the fact that the iPhone doesn't support your email is probably the least of your worries. All of the exchange servers I've ever used also simultaneously supported POP3 or IMAP. Besides, you can instruct iPhone to check your email every 5 minutes (or whatever interval you want), which is as close to Push as you need.
15.
Google Maps, yay, but no GPS functionality? Come on - if you're going to 'reinvent' the phone, GPS should be in there. Several high-end phones have it, so why not the iPhone? So what's the point - 8800 has it built in (Half our other phones can use GPS with the telenav puck)
Second valid point in 15. Although, when was the last time you got lost WALKING? That's what the nav system in my car is for. Once I'm out of the car, I already have a pretty good idea of where I want to go.
16.
No support for MP3 only Apples proprietary ITUNES AAC format (So you got to spend HOURS converting our MP3 collection into Itunes before you can load any music on the phone)
ABSOLUTELY FALSE. This is such a lie I don't even know where to begin. ALL IPODS, INCLUDING THE IPHONE, HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE ABILITY TO PLAY MP3S. The iPhone will support MP3, AAC, Wave, and any other music format other than windows media.
17.
If you want to purchase music you HAVE to do it from ITUNES for $0.99, our windows devices allow you to purchase music from multiple companies for as little as $0.59 or Rent all the music you want for only $14.99(With a free year on the Sync or Blackjack
The iTunes music store is the number 3 music retailer in America, trailing only Wal-Mart and Best Buy. They are number 3 for a reason: because iTunes kicks your ass.
18.
CANT USE ITUNES AS RINGTONES
Every other phone I've ever had hasn't allowed me to use MP3 ringtones either. Big deal.
19.
NO removable SIM card(WHAT?????) so if SIM goes bad you need a new phone
That doesn't make any sense... I could just as easiliy say about your Treo or Palm: "NO removeable screen? what? so if your screen goes bad you need a new phone!" stupid.
20.
Screen is Made of a semi-plastic material that will scratch easily(AKA IPOD) and will not stand up to demands of modern life.
100% false. Apple announced several days ago that they had implimented a design change since the introduction of the iPhone, and now the screen will be optical quality glass instead of plastic (like every other cheap smartphone out there)
21.
Fingers constantly smudging the screen. Yes, we're sure the touchscreen UI is wondrous, but watching video on a screen covered in fingerprints… great! and who wants to watch movies with fingerprints all over the screen
That is purely conjecture and you wouldn't know anything about smudging since you've never used it, would you?
22.
Will not work one Handed at all. The Iphone is designed to be held by one have and controlled with the index finger on the other. (isn't the whole world used to dialing with there thumbs....)
False. The new demonstration video posted on apple.com clearly shows the user operating the iPhone with two thumbs or one if you want.
23.
NO AIRPLANE MODE (IE you Cant turn off the transmitter like you can in all our other PDA/Smartphones SO you cant use it for music or movies when on a plane. FAA Will not allow it)
100% false. The only way to get your point across is to perpetuate lies. The new demonstration video on apple.com spends half a minute showing how easy it is to put the iPhone into airline mode.
24.
NO voice Command (so good luck dialing on a touch screen when driving Again not designed to be dialed with your thumb)
I never laugh so hard in my life than when I hear some dumbass in the airport saying 15 times into his cell phone "CALL HOME" because his phone doesn't understand him until he's screaming at the top of his lungs.
25.
The most important feature of the included browser (Safari) seems to be that it zooms in and out, but many phones have browsers, so this is not a big deal
I don't understand your point here... The Safari browser is a full browser that supports javascript and CSS... and you're somehow knocking it because other phones may have browsers too.
26.
NO JAVA support. Apple's commercials seam to claim that you can view any website (Well most use Java, so NO YOU CANT)
FALSE. Most sites use javaSCRIPT, which the iPhone will support. Very few sites use Java. In fact the only site I know of that uses Java is Facebook with the Upload Image applet (and if you don't have a Java browser, it automatically loads a simpler image uploader anyway).
Cliffs: It's going to suck
Cliffs: You're just pissed because you can't afford one. The iPhone is going to kick your ass.

I'm sure everybody on this forum could afford an iPhone if they wanted, so comments like that are silly and immature.

Its fucking 8gb. Do you need your entire library of songs on your phone? Are you too lazy to plug your phone into your computer once or twice a week to change playlists?

5.

BTW, AAC is not a proprietary Apple format. It's a compression scheme designed by Dolby. Here's more info: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/aac/
iTunes is not a format nor is any conversion necessary to load your existing library into the iPhone or other iPod, except if your tracks are WMA (Microsoft's proprietary format). Even then, the conversion is fast and automatic.
It is amazing how many false rumors continue to circulate when the facts are easily available on Apple's and AT&T's websites. Just watch the videos and see these myths debunked.
This isn't about defending the iPhone as if my mother invented it. It's about clearing up stupid misinformation. My mom didn't invent my TL, but if I saw a post saying it only burned proprietary Honda gas and had a 100 HP engine, I'd post a correction.
I'd love to get an iPhone, but I'm under a two-year contract with my BlackJack and am going to wait for iPhone 2.0 (or whatever the next generation brings) anyway.

i might pick up the iphone for my gf. she has my onld 8125 and she hates it. Even if i go to the store and they are sold out, a CS rep will take down my info and i will get it in 3days or less. Apple is supposed to hire 2000 temps to work on friday to handle the demand. Supposably there will be 3 million iphones for sale. That is a bigger launch than the ps3 and 360 combined.
Iphone does look cool.
altho i already have a phone that calls, plays music and lets me surf the web, its not touch screen but ill survive. i can even put 8 full movies on it with the sd card. so no biggie.
600 bucks just seems like i can put that into my car.....hehe. my 2 cents.

HA HA! Guys taking the time to write 1.5 million reason HE hates the iPod, just TOO funny. The point is NOBODY cares what the 2% of nay sayers have to spout. The FACT is that Apple is one of the most brillant marketing companies IN THE WORLD and THEY are the ones who set the price/profit AND they MARKET to it. Do you see any other phone vendors having the POWER to be able to collect 60$ profits on their phones? Of COURSE YOU DON'T! Will people pay $600 for this thing? Of COURSE they will! Will they run out of product availability on day one? Of COURSE they will. Will this drive further market chater? Of COURSE it will. Will this creat more demand? Of....I think you may FINALLY be getting the idea. I was one of the guys who bought the VERY first phone/PDA (I think it was a Kyocera) and I HAPPILY paid $500 for it. There are a LOT of people who are into (1) tech or (2) prestige for whom $500 is really no big thing. If you don't ALREADY own AAPL, it may still not be too late. It's only around $125/share and I (and most analyst) EXPECT it to go to $150 before ANY slowdown.... In short, it doesn't matter HOW many list these yo-yo's put on here, LOTS and I mean LOTS of people will be buying these things.
For those willing to wait, HTC already had developed a VERY similar hand-held unitand they operate nearly exclusively under other mfg names (supplying technologies such as the touch interfaces to other vendors). They too, are in the process of ramping up their OWN handheld devision (first time going direct) and will have a iPhone direct competitor in less than 1 year.

Im a idiot with my money must be why i am in finance, I would buy one but it wont work like the ipod video i have right now, my 30gig ipod sends video and audio to my TL through the sterio and Nav and plays movies/tv shows- youtube downloads on my navi, i read that the new ipod wont send video through the 30 pin doc connector it will only charge through that connection. and folks let me tell you even if it plays sound through ghe doc connection i still wont buy it i need video and audio to play through the charger connection and ill be in line on friday. and broke on saturday:-)
I have to give credit to Apple's marketing department for making it appear to be an easy to use the phone in its commercial. Besides the Apple fanboys, I think this is the main driver of all the hype.
As for myself I already have a phone that can do everything the iphone can do and then some(with the exception of YouTube videos
). So why switch companies and pay $300 more for the same thing??

Of course, there is a difference between doing the same things and doing them as elegantly as the iPhone can do. A Yugo will get you to your destination just as well as your TL, but there is difference in the experience.
