how many characters are the phone number... coz i am in canada... and by default... the network sends out the full 10-digit phone number (eg. +1-416-123-4567) but i dunno if the display fits.

It depends on your cell phone. The TL HFL is more compatible with some phones than others. Please search within this thread: 3GTL/2GRL Bluetooth Phones Compatibility... to see how your phone measures up. You can also search this forum.

I get 10 digits. e.g. 206-123-4567

That's what I get too. Full 10 digits. I have a Verizon LG VX8300. (I think that's what it is!)

I have a v710 I bought shortly after I got the car in 2004, and I get all 10 digits.

It would only make sense to have it programmable, but I don't think you can. I always have to look back on my phone to see whos calling.

I have started adding all of my contacts that I call on a regular basis to my Nav personal addresses. I can just touch the screen to give them a call...it is pretty convenient.

Why do you need the 1? I don't dial 1 when I use my cell phone, including on what would be long-distance calls on my home phone.

I just got a RAZR yesterday and it shows the 10 digits as well, at least when I paired it to the car this morning and tested it with my home phone it did. Now I just need to do some research (using the SEARCH function ) to try to figure out if I can operate it like the v710 with shortcuts and the like.
