I just blew out my second subwoofer in less than 1 month!!
hi guys,
i have a 06 TL non navi with a sub/amp combo. the first one was an alpine mrp m500 and a hertz ebx 250 10inch sub. a sound shop installed the system about 3 weeks ago. after 3 days, the subwoofer was finished. they told me it was because the radio signal was much more powerfull than the sub/amp. they repaired the high pass filter of the subwoofer and put an external hipass filter to prevent the amp to overheat and to get an better sound. Also, For the type of music i use to listen, the guy from the sound shop suggested me to upgrade to the ebx300 wich is a 12inch sub. the gain on the amp was at middle. the sound of this sub was incredible!! 2weeks after, the sub was done again! i was so pissed off!
I went back to the shop and told them that their installation was crap because that was the second subwoofer a blew in less than a month. they technician told me that the problem was not the sub nor the amp, it was the guy who play with the volume level i was so pissed off about what he told me because normally when you buy a set a amp/sub its to listen to your music right?
so the technician told me that because of the power of the radio i am not suppose to play music at the volume level not more than 18-20. i mean c'mon man! the sound system of the TL is not even loud and he want me to listen it at volume 20.
so my question is, is that true that the power of the signal from the oem radio and the signal of the oem sub is too strong to be supported by an alpine mrp 500?!
by the way they replaced the sub by an pionner champion series ts-w308D2 is that a good subwoofer?

Sounds like your installer doesn't know how to set the gains on the LOC or amp... But I have seen this happen from user error too, some people just don't have the ear for distortion. Pioneer subs pack a nice little punch too, not bad. Assuming the sub came in its own manufacturer-made box (from what I gather from google)?

Don't complain. I went through 8 subs...but for free essentially. Car Toys warranty is the best. Anyways, I found turning the bass and subwoofer controls on the stock HU help increase the life of them. Also, a sealed box is better than ported. I used to listen to music all the way up to 40, now it doesn't go past 30. It kind of is your fault...also, the amp might be too good for the sub...
Edit- The box does have something to do with it. I used to have a box made by Kicker, and as soon as I switched to the Car Toys one, I noticed a change, and they last longer...also I went dual 12"s which distributes power

It doesn't help that you have the Dual 2ohm version of that sub... means you're pushing your M500 on a 1ohm or 4ohm load. Neither of those are optimal, the 1ohm will overheat the amp and could cause distortion which will in turn lead to driver failure. I know that series of Alpine amps will tone themselves down when they start to overheat. On the other side if you are pushing the 4ohm load you've cut your power output to I believe around 300 rms on that amp. Chances are this is the case and the installer has the gains cranked to the max on that amp (furthering the potential to introduce distortion). The TS-W308D4 would be a much better match to that amp. That way your amp is going to be pushing a potential 500rms through the 2ohm load. Obviously the sub is 400w RMS so you will not have to push the amp as hard.

Sounds like user error too me, not trying to be an ass but in most cases a person can hear if there over driving a woofer unless the woofer just froze or its in a bandpass enclosure. if you hear the sub breaking up, you back down on the volume. if you want more output then get a custom box built thats tailored to what your musical needs are. I would have just went with a single 12 mid sized ported enclosure with a mid to low tune. It will retain alot of the SQ and generally will be a lil louder. Did you and the installer sit in the car when it was done and do a sound check???

That's just turrible.

It's all about pairing. Your sub and amp combo didn't work well together.

I myself ran that amp and an L7 square ten from kicker in a ported box and it slammed hard. I think its just your combo of sub and amp. I barely had my gain up on the amp and it kicked hard on the L7
