I found a GPS Permanent Mount Solution!

Hello all,
When I first got my TL I searched this site for a good permanent mount location for my Garmin Nuvi 350, I didn't really find one so I ended up hardwiring it to ignition and using the suction cup on the window. I hate having things up on my window, my radar detector is next to the rear view mirror and the GPS was pissing me off, so.... here is my solution. I disassembled the dash where the airvents and clock are and ran the power wire through the airvent, this was a little tricky but with a pick tool and some needlenose it took 2 minutes. Then I used the adhesive mount that most GPS's come with, stuck it where shown and suctioned the GPS mount to that. I love it there, it's much easier to touch then it was on my windshield and I think looks much better with still minimal wiring showing. Hope this is helpful. Notice the dash crack in the last pic... Acura needs to fix this problem!
Justin

That's pretty nifty! Are you able to unplug the Navi to hide it when your away from your TL? I just ordered the Megellan 1700 myself.

Looks good.

How did you hardwire the GPS to the ignition?
Was it difficult to disassemble the dash?
Would the heat from the air vent affect the GPS wire?

Sorry, was busy for a bit and couldn't respond. Thanks for the compliments though!

LovemyTL-S, yes I can unplug it, if you look in the last two pictures you can see that it sits in a cradle, I can just take it out, or unsuction the mount, leaving the power wire hanging out and the disk adhered to the dash.

GVL- Using this link http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp~TID~44835 I found that ignition was black/yellow on my 05 TL. All I had to do to get access was remove the panel above the pedals, find my wire in the ignition harness, make my connection and solder, it was easy. To pull the dash apart where the AC vents are, I removed the metal trim and then just pried with a flathead covered in a shoprag at the corners and it came right out. As for the wire, the Garmin one is very well insulated, it should be fine but I live in FL and don't use the heater much.

Thanks again for the nice comments.

Good place for the winter....but it will fry/kill your GPS in that place in the summer. I haven't put one suction cup mounted to the dash board display like over the tachometer.

I normally stick it to the passergers temp gauge - still the radio that way!

Great idea - I will do that for sure...
